Summary
Château Lafite Rothschild in Pauillac is one of the most famous wine estates in the world. As a Premier Grand Cru Classé of the 1855 Médoc classification, it belongs to the innermost circle of Bordeaux First Growths – alongside Latour, Margaux and Haut-Brion. Across around 112 hectares, mostly Cabernet Sauvignon grows here, complemented by Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, on gravel plateaus over limestone subsoil overlooking the Gironde estuary. The style is regarded as especially elegant, refined and long-lived. The estate has belonged to the Rothschild family since 1868 and is today the heart of the Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) group.
History
Winegrowing on the Lafite estate is documented as far back as the 17th century. The property rose to worldwide fame in the 18th century, when its wines were sought after at the courts of Europe and Lafite ranked among the most coveted Bordeaux of all. This early reputation laid the foundation for Lafite being placed at the very top of the famous 1855 classification.
The decisive modern turning point came in 1868: Baron James de Rothschild, head of the Paris branch of the banking family, acquired the estate. Lafite has been in family hands ever since and is today run through the parent company Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) – DBR (Lafite) for short. Since 2018 Saskia de Rothschild has led the group; technical direction has been in the hands of cellar master Eric Kohler since around 2016, who succeeded Charles Chevalier.
Location & Terroir
Château Lafite Rothschild lies in the commune of Pauillac in the Haut-Médoc, north of the city of Bordeaux. The terroir is shaped by deep gravel plateaus over limestone subsoil, which provide excellent drainage and store warmth – ideal conditions for the late-ripening lead variety Cabernet Sauvignon.
An important factor is the proximity to the Gironde estuary. The large body of water moderates temperature extremes, protects against late frosts and extends the ripening period. This combination of poor, well-aerated soils and maritime influence gives Lafite's wines their fine structure, cool elegance and enormous ageing potential.
Style & Philosophy
Among the First Growths, Lafite is regarded as the stylistically most refined and elegant representative. Where other Pauillac wines impress with power and richness, Lafite relies on finesse, balance and a silky texture. The Grand Vin is built on Cabernet Sauvignon (around 70 %), complemented by Merlot (around 25 %) plus small proportions of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.
In the cellar, the work is done with great precision and restraint: strict selection, classical vinification and ageing in barriques from the estate's own cooperage. The aim is always to put the terroir and the elegance of the grape variety in the foreground, rather than shaping the wine with too much oak or extraction. The result is wines that often seem closed in their youth and reveal their full class only after many years in the cellar.

- Carruades de Lafite – the second wine, usually with a higher share of Merlot and therefore a little more approachable in its youth
Beyond the core estate, the DBR (Lafite) group includes further renowned properties: Château Duhart-Milon (Pauillac), Château Rieussec (Sauternes) and Château L'Évangile (Pomerol) in Bordeaux, as well as Domaine d'Aussières in the Languedoc. Internationally, Viña Los Vascos (Chile), Bodegas CARO (Argentina) and Domaine de Long Dai (China) belong to it too. This extends the house's signature far beyond Pauillac.
Awards
Château Lafite Rothschild has ranked among the most highly rated and most sought-after wines in the world for generations and regularly achieves top prices at auction. Legendary is a bottle dated 1787, the so-called “Jefferson” bottle, which was auctioned at Christie's in 1985 for around 156,000 US dollars – although its authenticity was later questioned. As a group, DBR (Lafite) has also committed itself as a certified B Corporation to a strict standard of sustainability and responsibility.
