Summary
Tormaresca is the Puglia estate of the Florentine Antinori family. Since 1998 the historic house has been investing in the heel of the Italian boot, where it has built two independent estates: Tenuta Bocca di Lupo in the Castel del Monte area in the north and Masseria Maìme in the Salento in the south of the region. The focus is on native varieties such as Aglianico, Negroamaro and Primitivo, complemented by Fiano and Chardonnay. Tormaresca has played a major part in ensuring that Puglia is no longer seen merely as a source of bulk wine but as a region for characterful quality wines.
History
In the late 1990s Puglia was known above all as a source of powerful, cheap blending wines. The Antinori family, rooted in Tuscan wine for more than 600 years, recognised the region's potential early on. In 1998 it began investing in Puglia and founded Tormaresca. The name is often associated with the old watchtowers along the Apulian coast that still shape the landscape today.
Instead of buying in grapes, Antinori relied on its own vineyards: it acquired the Bocca di Lupo estate in the Murgia and the Maìme masseria in the Salento. In the years that followed, vineyards were replanted, cellars modernised and a range built that shows Puglia's diversity – from fresh white wines to age-worthy reds.
Location & Terroir
The two estates could hardly be more different. Tenuta Bocca di Lupo lies near Minervino Murge on the Murgia plateau, within the Castel del Monte appellation. The vineyards sit at around 250 to 300 metres on calcareous soils; the altitude brings marked differences between day and night temperatures. The main variety here is Aglianico, alongside Fiano, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Moscato di Trani.
Masseria Maìme lies in the northern Salento near San Pietro Vernotico in the province of Brindisi, close to the Adriatic coast. The flat, sunny land is cooled by sea breezes – ideal conditions for the classic Salento varieties Negroamaro and Primitivo. Besides vines, the estate also includes olive groves and a stretch of unspoilt coastal landscape.
Style & Philosophy
Tormaresca combines Apulian tradition with modern cellar technology. The wines are fruit-driven and juicy yet balanced – alcohol is carried by freshness and fine tannins rather than making the wines feel heavy. The top wines mature in French and partly Hungarian oak barrels and tonneaux and are aged further in bottle before release.
An important pillar is the sustainable, organic farming of the vineyards that the house emphasises for its estates; the Aglianico Bocca di Lupo, for example, comes from organically farmed vineyards. Tenuta Bocca di Lupo is also a destination for visitors who want to get to know the cellar and vineyards.
Notable Sites & Wines
The range spans approachable everyday wines to ambitious single-estate wines:
- Bocca di Lupo – pure Aglianico from the estate of the same name, Castel del Monte DOC
- Masseria Maìme – pure Negroamaro, Salento IGT, with long ageing in tonneaux
- Torcicoda – Primitivo from the Salento, spicy and dark-fruited
- Calafuria – Negroamaro rosé, one of Puglia's best-known rosés
- Pietrabianca – Chardonnay-based white wine from Castel del Monte
- Neprica – easy-drinking red from Apulian and international varieties
Awards
Tormaresca's top wines, above all Bocca di Lupo and Masseria Maìme, regularly receive good ratings in Italian wine guides and from international critics. Even more important is the signal the project sent: the fact that a house of Antinori's stature built its own estates in Puglia lastingly boosted the region's reputation and paved the way for other quality producers.
