Summary

Weingut Joh. Bapt. Schäfer in Burg Layen is one of the most exciting risers of the Nahe. The family estate on the river's lower reaches, just a few kilometres before it meets the Rhine, is run today in the fourth generation by Sebastian Schäfer. Since taking over in 2002, he has grown it from around four to roughly ten hectares and led it into the VDP in 2013. The focus is on Riesling with elegance and precision – above all the Grosses Gewächs wines from the Dorsheim sites Goldloch and Pittermännchen.

History

The estate's roots go back to the years before the First World War; 1911 is usually given as the founding year. The family showed a feel for quality early on: the 1921 vintage was the first the estate sold not in cask but in bottle – remarkable for the Nahe at the time.

For decades Joh. Bapt. Schäfer remained a small family business. The decisive turning point came in 2002: father Johann Baptist Schäfer handed the estate – then only around four hectares – to his 25-year-old son Sebastian. The young winemaker consistently steered the estate towards quality, lowered yields, invested in top sites and sharpened the profile of the wines.

Recognition followed: in 2013 the estate was admitted to the Association of German Prädikat Wine Estates (VDP) – the first new member on the Nahe in twelve years. Today Sebastian Schäfer farms around ten hectares and produces some 60,000 bottles a year.

Location & Terroir

Burg Layen lies on the lower Nahe, where the valley opens towards the Rhine. The vineyards are spread across the villages of Burg Layen, Dorsheim, Laubenheim and Rümmelsheim – partly on steep slopes, partly on higher plateau sites facing east and west.

Geologically, the lower Nahe is remarkably diverse. Typical of the estate's sites are deep loamy soils interspersed with slate, quartzite and gravel. This mix gives the Rieslings structure and spice, while the proximity to the Rhine and the open valley ensure a comparatively mild climate. Cool nights at the same time preserve the fresh acidity so characteristic of the Nahe.

Style & Philosophy

Sebastian Schäfer stands for elegance and precision – a verdict also highlighted by wine guides such as the VINUM Weinguide. His Rieslings are clear, finely structured and shaped by terroir rather than opulent. Vineyard work is geared towards sustainability; the estate is certified under Fair'n Green.

The wines follow the VDP classification: estate wines as the entry level, village wines from Dorsheim and Burg Layen, wines from Erste Lage sites and, at the top, the Grosses Gewächs wines. Alongside these, the estate maintains the tradition of off-dry Kabinett. Around a third of the area is planted with Pinot varieties – Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir), Weißburgunder (Pinot Blanc), Grauburgunder (Pinot Gris) and Chardonnay – plus varieties such as Scheurebe. With its sparkling wine, the estate is also recognised as a VDP.SEKT producer.

Notable Vineyards & Wines

The top of the range comes from two Grand Cru sites in Dorsheim and several premier cru sites:

  • Dorsheimer Goldloch (VDP.Grosse Lage) – source of one of the estate's most renowned Grosses Gewächs wines
  • Dorsheimer Pittermännchen (VDP.Grosse Lage) – the estate owns around 1.7 of the roughly seven hectares of this site
  • Burg Layer Schlossberg (VDP.Erste Lage) – the home site right in the village
  • Laubenheimer Karthäuser (VDP.Erste Lage)
  • Rümmelsheimer Steinköpfchen (VDP.Erste Lage)

Besides the Grosses Gewächs wines from Goldloch and Pittermännchen, the village wines and the Kabinett Rieslings are an excellent introduction to the house style.

Awards

The most important confirmation was admission to the VDP in 2013. Since then the estate has been reviewed regularly in the major German wine guides, such as Eichelmann and the VINUM Weinguide, which particularly praise the elegance and precision of the Rieslings. The Grosses Gewächs wines from Goldloch have repeatedly received ratings in the region of 95 points in the trade press. Joh. Bapt. Schäfer has thus established itself as one of the most reliable addresses on the lower Nahe.
