Summary

For many wine lovers, Domaine Huet in Vouvray simply is the embodiment of Chenin Blanc. Since 1928 the estate has made wines of extraordinary precision and longevity on the limestone plateau above the Loire. Three single vineyards – Le Haut-Lieu, Le Mont and Le Clos du Bourg – are vinified separately, and each vintage nature decides whether they become dry, off-dry or sweet wines. Farmed biodynamically since 1990, Huet was among the early pioneers of this approach in France.

History

The estate's story begins in 1928, when Parisian bistro owner Victor Huet settled in Vouvray and bought the Le Haut-Lieu vineyard. His son Gaston Huet later took over, shaped the domaine for decades and was also a central figure in the village. Under him the estate grew: Le Clos du Bourg was added in 1953, followed by Le Mont in 1957.

From the 1970s, Gaston's son-in-law Noël Pinguet worked at the estate and gradually took responsibility for vineyard and cellar. He converted the domaine to biodynamics in 1990. After Gaston Huet's death, Pinguet looked for a partner and found him in 2003 in New York businessman Anthony Hwang, whose family took over the estate. Pinguet retired in 2012; since then Benjamin Joliveau, at Huet since 2008, has been in charge of winemaking. Today Sarah Hwang runs the domaine.

Location & Terroir

Vouvray lies a few kilometres east of Tours on the north bank of the Loire. The vineyards sit on a plateau of tuffeau, the soft limestone typical of Touraine, into which the village's cellars are also carved. The climate is mild and Atlantic with continental influences – warm, humid autumns can bring noble rot, while cooler years lean towards dry wines.

Each of the three vineyards has its own character: Le Haut-Lieu (around 15 hectares), with deeper clay-limestone soils, yields approachable, harmonious wines. Le Mont (around 9 hectares), with stony soils of clay, flint and limestone, produces taut, mineral wines. Le Clos du Bourg (around 6 hectares), a walled vineyard with shallow soil over tuffeau, is considered the most powerful and complex of the three.

Style & Philosophy

Huet's philosophy is to follow the vintage rather than shape it. Grapes are hand-picked in several passes; depending on ripeness and botrytis, the vineyards yield Sec, Demi-Sec or Moelleux. In exceptional years there are selective pickings such as the Première Trie and the rare sweet top cuvée Cuvée Constance, named after Victor Huet's wife. The range is completed by a traditional-method Vouvray Pétillant.

The cellar work is restrained: ageing mostly in stainless steel and old wooden casks, with no dominant new oak. The aim is wines with vibrant acidity, fine texture and enormous ageing potential.

Notable Sites & Wines

  • Le Haut-Lieu – the founding vineyard, often the most approachable entry into the Huet style
  • Le Mont – taut, mineral and especially long-lived
  • Le Clos du Bourg – the walled vineyard near the church, dense and multi-layered
  • Cuvée Constance – sweet top cuvée, only in exceptional vintages
  • Vouvray Pétillant – finely sparkling Chenin Blanc
