Summary
Casa Ermelinda Freitas in the hamlet of Fernando Pó near Palmela is perhaps the best-known family wine estate on the Península de Setúbal – the peninsula south of Lisbon that lies between the Tagus and the Sado. Across around 550 hectares it produces above all fruit-forward, supple reds from Castelão, along with fresh whites, rosés and the region's signature Moscatel de Setúbal. The estate's history is remarkable: for four generations the family sold its wine in bulk, and only in 1997, under Leonor Freitas, did it begin bottling its own brands. Within a few decades this grew into one of Portugal's most successful wine businesses.
History
The estate's roots reach back to around 1920, when Deonilde Freitas farmed vineyards in Fernando Pó. Across the generations the business passed from woman to woman: from Deonilde to Germana Freitas, then to Ermelinda Freitas, who gave the house its name. Ermelinda took over after the early death of her husband Manuel João de Freitas – at a time when a woman-run wine estate was the exception in Portugal.
Until the 1990s the family sold its harvest almost entirely as bulk wine to bottlers and cooperatives. The turning point came in 1997: Ermelinda's daughter Leonor Freitas took charge and switched the business to its own bottled wines. The first brand of its own was Terras do Pó, named after the home village. Dona Ermelinda, Quinta da Mimosa, Vinha do Rosário and Leo d'Honor followed.
The success of the brands financed rapid expansion: the roughly 60 hectares Leonor Freitas originally inherited have grown to about 550 hectares today. The company also acquired estates in two further Portuguese wine regions – Quinta do Minho in the Vinho Verde area and Quinta de Canivães in the Douro. The house celebrated its centenary in 2020.
Location & Terroir
The Península de Setúbal lies south of Lisbon between the estuaries of the Tagus and the Sado. The climate is Mediterranean and strongly marked by the Atlantic: hot, dry summers, mild winters and a steady sea breeze that cools the grapes and keeps the fruit healthy.
Almost all of Casa Ermelinda Freitas's vineyards stand on the flat, deep sandy soils of the plain around Fernando Pó. These soils define the region: they hold little water, warm up quickly and were historically largely spared by phylloxera – one reason why an unusually large number of old, ungrafted Castelão vines have survived here. On sand, Castelão yields supple, berry-scented reds with fine spice. Further west, on the limestone slopes of the Serra da Arrábida, the region's classic Moscatel wines are made instead.
Style & Philosophy
The estate's signature is deliberately approachable. Fruit is at the centre: ripe red berries, soft tannins, moderate use of oak. The wines are meant to be drinkable young without seeming thin – a style shaped by oenologist Jaime Quendera for more than two decades.
Technically the operation is modern: temperature-controlled fermentation, single-variety vinification of the parcels and selective ageing of the top wines in French and American barriques. For the whites from Fernão Pires, Arinto, Verdelho, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, freshness comes first; they are mostly made reductively in stainless steel.
The range is another defining trait. Casa Ermelinda Freitas produces on a large scale – several million litres a year – while keeping quality consistent across every price tier. It is precisely this combination of volume and reliability that has made the name a byword for good value in Portugal.
Notable Sites & Wines
The portfolio is organised by brand, each marking a quality tier of its own:
- Terras do Pó – the estate's first own brand, uncomplicated reds and whites from the plain around Fernando Pó
- Dona Ermelinda – the core range, named after the grandmother; reds from Castelão with Touriga Nacional, Syrah and Aragonez, plus whites from Fernão Pires and Arinto
- Quinta da Mimosa – a Castelão red from old vines, one of the house's best-known wines
- Leo d'Honor – the top range, named after Leonor Freitas
- Vinha do Rosário – another single-parcel brand of the estate
- Moscatel de Setúbal – the region's fortified sweet wine, made from Moscatel de Setúbal
Added to these are sparkling wines and the wines of the acquired estates in the Vinho Verde area and the Douro.
Awards
Casa Ermelinda Freitas is among the most decorated wine producers in Portugal. The estate itself states that it has won more than 900 awards at national and international competitions since 1999; more recent announcements cite considerably higher figures still. Medals regularly arrive from the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles and the Portuguese Concurso Vinhos de Portugal, along with top placings at the regional competition of the Península de Setúbal.
Leonor Freitas herself has been honoured several times in Portugal as an entrepreneur and winegrower – not least for building a business that went from bulk-wine supplier to internationally distributed brand within a single generation. The wine tourism facility opened in 2020, with a museum, tasting room and event hall, makes that story tangible on site today.
