Weingut Müller-Catoir in Haardt near Neustadt is one of the oldest and most renowned addresses in the Pfalz. Family-owned since 1744 and today in the ninth generation, the estate farms around 25 hectares in the top sites of the Mittelhaardt. Müller-Catoir is famous for its purist, aroma-driven style – clean wines that put fruit and terroir front and centre. Alongside Riesling, the estate has earned a worldwide reputation above all with the rare varieties Rieslaner and Scheurebe, and remains a benchmark here to this day.
History
The estate's roots reach back to 1744 – making Müller-Catoir one of the oldest continuously family-owned estates in the Pfalz. Over the centuries the business has been shaped again and again by strong personalities, and for almost a century it was at times led by women of the family.
The decisive era of its more recent history began in 1961 with Hans-Günter Schwarz as cellar master. Over four decades he made Müller-Catoir a national and international byword and shaped a style that set an example far beyond the estate itself. Since 2002 Martin Franzen has carried this signature forward in the cellar, while the Catoir family, with Philipp David Catoir, runs the estate in the ninth generation.
Location & Terroir
Müller-Catoir lies on the Mittelhaardt, the climatically favoured heartland of the Pfalz on the German Wine Route. The vineyards are concentrated in the parishes of Haardt, Gimmeldingen and Mußbach – a mosaic of coloured sandstone (Buntsandstein), loess and weathered limestone soils at the foot of the Haardt escarpment.
The mild, sun-drenched climate and the shelter of the Palatinate Forest create ideal conditions for fully ripe, aromatic grapes. Around 70 percent of the vineyards lie on slopes, which lends the wines freshness and tension. This diversity of soils and sites makes it possible to draw out a distinct character from each parish.
Style & Philosophy
The Müller-Catoir style is closely bound up with the principle of minimal cellar work established by Hans-Günter Schwarz: clean fermentation, little intervention, no fining at any price. The aim is to bring fruit, aroma and terroir into the bottle as unaltered as possible. The result is clear, precise and expressive white wines with great drinkability and ageing potential.
Alongside Riesling, the estate tends the aromatic varieties with particular devotion. Scheurebe and Rieslaner – two rare German new crossings – are made here to a quality that has few equals internationally, from dry versions to concentrated nobly sweet Auslese, Beerenauslese and Trockenbeerenauslese.

For decades Müller-Catoir has consistently ranked among the highest-rated estates in the Pfalz and in Germany, and it regularly features with top marks in the leading wine guides. Above all, though, the estate has written winemaking history by raising the aromatic varieties Rieslaner and Scheurebe to world class and, with Hans-Günter Schwarz's purist cellar style, inspiring an entire generation of German winemakers.
