Federspiel is the middle quality level in the classification system of the Vinea Wachau. The name comes from traditional falconry and refers to a lure used to call birds of prey back – an allusion to the elegance and balance of this wine category.
Federspiel wines must have a natural alcohol content between 11.5% and 12.5%, without the addition of sugar (chaptalization). They represent the classic Wachau style: powerful enough for substance and structure, yet fresh enough for elegance and easy drinkability.

Grapes for Federspiel are harvested at moderate ripeness – ripe enough for aromatic concentration, but not overripe, in order to preserve the characteristic freshness. Must weight typically falls between 17–19° KMW (Klosterneuburger Mostwaage).
Enjoyment and Storage
Federspiel wines are ready to drink 6–12 months after harvest, displaying their youthful fruitiness. Many develop additional complexity after 2–3 years without losing their freshness. Single-vineyard wines can comfortably age for 5–7 years.
