Summary
Weingut Tiefenbrunner – Castel Turmhof in Entiklar, a hamlet of Kurtatsch an der Weinstraße, is one of the best-known addresses in Alto Adige (Südtirol). The Castel Turmhof manor, whose listed residential tower dates from the 13th century, has been in family hands since 1675; the founding year of the winery is taken to be 1848, when the wine trade was formally registered. Today Christof and Sabine Tiefenbrunner run the estate in the fifth generation, while the sixth generation is already involved. Tiefenbrunner is famous above all for the Müller Thurgau Vigna Feldmarschall von Fenner, grown at around 1,000 metres on the Fennberg – the highest Müller-Thurgau vineyard in Europe. Roughly 750,000 bottles a year, about 70 to 75% of them white, come from sites between some 210 and 1,000 metres in altitude.
History
In 1225 the property was first documented as 'Linticlar' – a name that still echoes in the Linticlarus reserve range. The residential tower of the Turmhof dates from the 13th century and is a listed monument. The manor has been in family ownership since 1675. The winery's founding year is taken to be 1848, when the wine trade was registered. The exact chain of ownership through the 19th century is not unambiguous in the sources; what is documented is that in 1897 Luise Tiefenthaler married Johann Tiefenbrunner – hence the estate's present name.
The modern estate was shaped by Herbert Tiefenbrunner (1928–2015), who became cellar master in 1943 at just 15 years old and left his mark over decades. 1968 brought the first estate bottling; in the same year his wife Hilde Goller Tiefenbrunner opened a small inn, the forerunner of today's hospitality at the estate. In 1972 Herbert Tiefenbrunner planted the vineyard on the Fennberg – the parcel that yields the Feldmarschall von Fenner. Christof Tiefenbrunner joined the business in 1983 and has led it since around 2000.
The house has long been technically self-reliant: its own hydroelectric plant has supplied the estate since 1910. A new fermentation and barrique cellar followed in 2020, and a photovoltaic installation in 2024.
Location & Terroir
Entiklar lies at 260 metres in the southern reaches of Alto Adige, yet the estate's vineyards range from around 210 to 1,000 metres. That span is the real asset: it allows each variety to be planted at the altitude that best preserves its acidity and aromatics.
The most spectacular parcel is the Feldmarschall von Fenner vineyard at roughly 1,000 metres on the Fennberg (Favogna) in the municipality of Margreid. The south-facing high plateau is sheltered to the north by the rock ridge known as the 'Rotwand'. Its soils are red, heterogeneous glacial moraine gravels with sand, silt and clay, white marble and blocks of porphyry and granite; deeper down come dolomite and limestone.
The other single vineyards have profiles of their own. The Au site immediately above the estate covers around one hectare between 260 and 320 metres on deep, clay-rich sand with a high limestone content. Rachtl in Völser Aicha sits on silty sand and powdered limestone over grey porphyry. Further vineyards are spread across Entiklar, Kurtatsch, Margreid, the Fennberg, Bolzano and Montan.
Style & Philosophy
Tiefenbrunner is a white-wine estate with a red sideline: about 70 to 75% of production is white, and 12 grape varieties are turned into around 28 wines. The whites are led by Weißburgunder, Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc, Gewürztraminer, Müller-Thurgau and Goldmuskateller; the reds comprise Vernatsch, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Lagrein, Blauburgunder and Rosenmuskateller.
The philosophy is legible in the tiering of the ranges: Merus forms the accessible base, Turmhof gathers the hillside selections, Linticlarus the reserves, and the Vigna line introduced in 2016 is reserved for single vineyards. Under the name Ad Tempus the estate releases reserve bottlings late – an admission that its finest wines need time. In the cellar, Stephan Rohregger has been responsible for the house signature as cellar master and oenologist since 2007.

The Müller Thurgau Vigna Feldmarschall von Fenner very consistently receives the Tre Bicchieri award from Gambero Rosso – among others for the 2015 to 2022 vintages, most recently in the 2026 guide. Falstaff rated the Vigna Toren Cabernet Sauvignon Riserva 2020 at 97 points; according to Falstaff the estate itself performs at the highest level and is listed with five stars in the 2025 edition. wein.plus counts Tiefenbrunner among the country's best producers. Ratings also appear in Slow Wine, Vitae/AIS, Bibenda, Decanter, Wine Spectator, James Suckling, Vinum and Gault&Millau, among others.
