Summary

Domaine Lafage near Perpignan is one of the most important addresses in Roussillon, France's southernmost wine region. Across around 160 hectares – from the Mediterranean coast to the foothills of the Pyrenees – stand many old vines, above all Grenache and Carignan. Jean-Marc and Eliane Lafage built the estate from a long-standing wine-growing family since the 1990s into an internationally noted producer. Lafage is known for powerful, sun-ripened wines, the classic sweet Vins Doux Naturels and outstanding value.

History

The Lafage family has been rooted in viticulture in Roussillon for generations. For a long time it delivered its grapes; it was Jean-Marc Lafage who first moved from mere grape-growing to making and marketing his own wine. Together with his wife, the oenologist Eliane Lafage, he built today's estate from the 1990s. Beforehand both had gathered international experience – in South America, California, South Africa and Australia, among others.

Step by step they enlarged the estate, secured old vine parcels and made the domaine one of Roussillon's best-known producers. The estate's seat is the Mas Miraflors, a Catalan country house near Perpignan.

Location & Terroir

Roussillon is France's southernmost wine region, right on the Spanish border and strongly Catalan in character. It is hot, dry and sunny; the Tramontane wind dries the vines and keeps them healthy. These conditions produce powerful, ripe wines.

Lafage's vineyards are spread over many parcels – from the Mediterranean coast near Canet-en-Roussillon to the foothills of the Pyrenees below the Canigou. The soils are correspondingly varied: schist, granite, limestone and gravel. This range allows the estate to draw out the fitting character from each site and variety.

Style & Philosophy

Lafage stands for powerful yet balanced wines with clear fruit and southern warmth. At the centre is Grenache in its red, grey and white forms, often from old vines, complemented by Syrah, Mourvèdre and Carignan. Among the whites, Marsanne, Roussanne and Muscat play an important role.

The range is broad: dry reds, whites and rosés under the AOC Côtes du Roussillon and IGP Côtes Catalanes appellations, as well as the classic sweet Vins Doux Naturels such as Muscat de Rivesaltes. A hallmark is the consistently high level across the entire price range.

Notable Sites & Wines

The range runs from accessible entry-level wines to ambitious top cuvées. Among the best-known wines are:

  • Bastide Miraflors – a dense Syrah-Grenache cuvée from old vines, one of the flagships
  • Narassa – a powerful, Grenache-driven red
  • Cuvée Nicolas – a Grenache named after the family's son
  • Authentique and Cuvée Centenaire – wines from very old vines
  • Muscat de Rivesaltes and dry Muscat as aromatic whites

Many of these wines offer exceptional depth for their price.

Awards

Domaine Lafage's wines repeatedly receive high scores from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate and other international critics. Above all, the estate is regarded as a benchmark for value in Roussillon: it combines a generous, sun-ripened style with precision and reliability across the whole range. Lafage has thus contributed significantly to strengthening Roussillon's reputation as a source of characterful, affordable wines.
