Summary
Bodegas Félix Solís in Valdepeñas is one of those wineries you know without knowing the name: behind Viña Albali – one of the best-selling Spanish wines anywhere – stands a family business that began in 1952 with a house they bought and a handful of barrels. Today the third generation runs one of the largest family-owned wine businesses in the world, with around 500 hectares of its own vineyards, grapes from some 5,000 partner growers, and a barrel cellar housing roughly 130,000 American oak barrels. The style is unpretentious and clear: soft, vanilla-spiced Tempranillo from DO Valdepeñas, cleanly made, long-aged, and priced so that Reserva and Gran Reserva become everyday pleasures.
History
The story begins in 1952, when Félix Solís Fernández and his wife Leonor Yáñez moved from Villanueva de los Infantes to Valdepeñas and bought a property where they started making wine. At a time when Valdepeñas was known mainly as a supplier of bulk wine to Madrid, the Solís family bet early on bottled wine under its own name.
1962 saw the birth of the Viña Albali brand, named after a star in the constellation Aquarius. It became the foundation of the house and, over the decades, one of the best-selling wine brands in Spanish food retail. In 1975 today's winery opened on the old national road between Madrid and Cádiz – a site that has been extended and technically renewed many times since.
The second and third generations pushed above all exports and expansion. Under Félix Solís Ramos the facilities were modernised with substantial investment, and the family business grew into the Félix Solís Avantis group: alongside the wineries in Valdepeñas and La Mancha it includes the estates run under the Pagos del Rey name in Ribera del Duero, Rueda, Rioja and Toro. The wines are now available in more than 115 countries.
Location & Terroir
Valdepeñas lies in the south of Castilla-La Mancha, on a plateau at around 700 metres above sea level. The climate is markedly continental with a Mediterranean streak: hot, very dry summers, cold winters, wide day-night swings and little rainfall. Vines are planted far apart, often trained low, to make the most of the scarce water.
The soils are characteristic: a reddish-brown, chalky topsoil over a firm limestone base that stores moisture and releases it again in the driest months. That is precisely what allows ripe, healthy grapes to be harvested without irrigation. The combination of limestone, heat and altitude yields Tempranillo with soft tannins, dark fruit and moderate acidity – the basis for the house's approachable style. Harvest runs from mid-August to early October.
Style & Philosophy
Félix Solís does not pursue a cult-wine philosophy but one of reliability at scale. The aim is consistent quality, varietal fruit and a price that makes drinking wine an everyday affair. Behind it stands a cellar working with temperature-controlled fermentation, its own laboratory and seamless analysis – right down to a robotised barrel store that tracks every single barrel.
Stylistically, American oak is the defining element. Ageing the Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva wines in around 130,000 barrels gives the Tempranillo its typical notes of vanilla, coconut and sweet spice, woven into ripe cherry and plum. The wines only reach the market ready to drink: buy a Gran Reserva and you get a wine that has already spent many years in barrel and bottle.
The house has also broadened its range considerably – with fresh whites from Airén and Verdejo, rosés, organic lines, frizzante and de-alcoholised wines. Sustainability has moved on too: lighter bottles, renewable electricity and recycled packaging.
Famous Vineyards & Wines
Unlike small single-vineyard estates, Félix Solís puts the brand rather than the individual site at the centre. The key lines are:
- Viña Albali Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva – the Tempranillo classics and the backbone of the house
- Viña Albali Selección Privada Gran Reserva – the brand's most ambitious tier
- Viña Albali Tempranillo Selección and Viña Albali Verdejo – youthful, fruity everyday wines
- Los Molinos – Valdepeñas wines from Airén, Verdejo and Tempranillo
- Peñasol and Soliera – light, uncomplicated lines for the broad market
If you want to get to know the house style, start with the Viña Albali Reserva: soft, spicy, with the balance of maturity and accessibility so typical of Valdepeñas.
Awards
Despite – or precisely because of – its size, the wines regularly do well in international competitions. The Viña Albali Gran Reserva was named best wine from Valdepeñas at Mundus Vini and won medals at Bacchus, the Berliner Wine Trophy and VINESPAÑA, among others; James Suckling also rated the 2018 vintage 92 points. The Viña Albali Reserva has been awarded at Mundus Vini and the Decanter World Wine Awards.
At company level, the group was named best Spanish winery by AWC Vienna and ranked among the six best wine producers in the world in the World Ranking of Wines and Spirits. For a house that mainly produces affordable wine in large volumes, that is a remarkable record.
