History
Strehn is a long-established family estate in Deutschkreutz, run today by the fourth generation. For decades the focus lay – as at many estates in Mittelburgenland – on powerful Blaufränkisch reds. The decisive shift came with the younger generation: around 2012 they took over responsibility and consistently reoriented the estate, with a clear focus on rosé.
At the time, that decision was anything but obvious. While rosé elsewhere was often treated as a by-product, the family made it the core of their identity. Today the estate is shaped by award-winning winemaker Pia Strehn, her brothers Patrick and Andreas (Andy) and mother Monika. Pia Strehn has become the face of the estate – a rosé ambassador who represents the category well beyond Burgenland.
Location & Terroir
The estate lies in Deutschkreutz, the heart of Mittelburgenland. The region is nicknamed „Blaufränkischland” because it ranks among the best growing areas for the variety in Austria. Nestled between the Ödenburg hills to the north, the Güns mountains to the west and the open plain toward Hungary in the east, it enjoys a warm, Pannonian-influenced climate.
Long, sunny summers and warming winds from the Hungarian lowlands ripen the grapes fully, while heavy, deep soils – often loam over gravel and limestone – give Blaufränkisch its characteristic structure and spice. Exactly this combination of warmth and mineral subsoil makes Mittelburgenland the home of powerful yet fresh reds – and provides the ripe, aromatic base for the estate's rosés too.
