Summary
Robert Mondavi Winery in Oakville is the founding monument of modern Napa Valley. When Robert Mondavi launched the estate in 1966 at the age of 52, it was the first significant new winery in the valley since the end of Prohibition – and a declaration of intent: Mondavi wanted to make wines in California that could stand comparison with the best growths of Europe. Its heart to this day is the historic To Kalon Vineyard, where the estate farms around 450 acres. From here come the Reserve Cabernets and the Fumé Blanc, with which Mondavi gave Sauvignon Blanc new standing in the United States. Since 2004 the winery has belonged to Constellation Brands.
History
Robert Mondavi came from a family of Italian-American wine growers and initially worked at the family business Charles Krug in St. Helena. After a rift within the family he struck out on his own in 1966 and founded his own winery in Oakville – together with partners and on just under twelve acres of land at first. It was the first major winery to be newly established in Napa Valley after Prohibition.
Mondavi was far more than a winemaker: he was a missionary for an idea. He travelled to Bordeaux and Burgundy, brought back French barriques and techniques, experimented with cold fermentation, fruit selection and barrel types – and he spoke publicly about wine at a time when hardly anyone in the United States did. In the late 1970s he sealed the Opus One joint venture with Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Château Mouton Rothschild, the first transatlantic wine project of its kind and a symbol that Napa had arrived on equal footing with Bordeaux.
In 2004 the company was acquired by Constellation Brands for around 1.3 billion US dollars. In the major portfolio realignment of 2025, Constellation parted with volume brands such as Robert Mondavi Private Selection and Woodbridge, but expressly kept the Oakville winery in its high-end portfolio. After a multi-year and very extensive renovation, the historic property reopened to guests in April 2026.
Location & Terroir
The winery lies on Route 29 in Oakville, an AVA of its own in the heart of Napa Valley. Oakville counts among the world's finest addresses for Cabernet Sauvignon: cool fog drifting up from San Pablo Bay in the mornings meets warm, sunny afternoons here. That swing between day and night delivers ripe tannins while preserving freshness.
Defining is the To Kalon Vineyard on the western edge of the valley below the Mayacamas Mountains. The soils are alluvial fans of gravel, sand and loam – free-draining, rather lean and therefore ideal for deep, concentrated red wines. The site was planted as early as 1868 by Napa pioneer H. W. Crabb; the name comes from Greek and means roughly the beautiful. The old vines are remarkable: the so-called I-Block holds Sauvignon Blanc vines dating from 1945, among the oldest commercial plantings of the variety in North America. Farming in the To Kalon Vineyard is now certified organic (CCOF).
Style & Philosophy
Robert Mondavi's guiding thought was origin: a wine should reflect soil, climate and the hand of the people who make it. In practice that means gentle extraction in the cellar, variety- and parcel-specific vinification and a measured, precise use of French oak – Mondavi was among the first in California to use barriques consistently to refine rather than to mask.
The estate's Cabernets are powerful but never showy: dark fruit, cedar and cassis, fine-grained tannins and the potential to age for many years. Fumé Blanc is the house's second great idea: Mondavi vinified Sauvignon Blanc dry and in wood and gave it a new name in the late 1960s, borrowed from Pouilly-Fumé in the Loire. A variety then out of favour became a Californian success story. Alongside these come Chardonnay and wines from further Napa appellations such as the Stags Leap District.
The modernisation completed in 2026 has brought the cellar technically up to date – among other things with concrete tanks and precise temperature control – without touching the architectural heritage.

The greatest distinction of Robert Mondavi Winery is its influence. The estate defined Napa Valley's quality ambition, popularised varietal labelling on US bottles and, with art, concerts and cuisine, shaped the model of modern wine tourism. Robert Mondavi himself was honoured many times over and is regarded as the most influential ambassador of Californian wine in the 20th century; the Robert Mondavi Institute for Wine and Food Science at the University of California, Davis, bears his name.
