Summary
Weingut Rappenhof in Alsheim is one of the most traditional family estates in Rheinhessen: wine has been grown here since 1604, and the estate is now in its 13th generation. The Muth family farms around 45 to 50 hectares on the Rheinfront between Alsheim, Oppenheim and Nierstein – including parcels in the famous Pettenthal and Ölberg sites on the Roter Hang. Riesling is at the heart of the range, but Rappenhof is also known as an early Chardonnay pioneer in the region. The estate has been a VDP member since 1971.
History
According to tradition, Rappenhof's story begins in 1604 with Hieronymus Hirsch, who established winegrowing in the family. The estate remained in family hands over the generations; the Hirsch family later became the Hirsch-Muth family. In 1971 the estate joined the VDP and has belonged to the circle of Prädikat estates for decades.
A defining figure was Reinhard Muth, who in 1984 became the first in Rheinhessen to plant Chardonnay – a bold move at a time when the variety hardly played a role in Germany. Rappenhof was also among the pioneers of ageing Chardonnay in barrique. Later, Klaus Muth took over the management.
Since 2018 his daughter Elisabeth Muth has worked at the estate, now as the 13th generation. Together with her husband Johannes, who gained experience at Kühling-Gillot and Battenfeld-Spanier, she has modernised the estate: a new label design arrived in 2020, the house and tasting room were renovated, and according to the estate the conversion to organic viticulture has been complete since 2023.
Location & Terroir
Alsheim lies at the southern end of the Rheinfront, the narrow strip along the Rhine regarded as the heartland of high-quality Rheinhessen Riesling. The climate is mild and comparatively dry, and the river moderates temperatures.
Rappenhof's vineyards are spread across Alsheim, Oppenheim and Nierstein. The heart of the estate is its parcels on the Roter Hang in Nierstein: the red slate (Rotliegend) of the Pettenthal and Ölberg sites stores heat and yields Rieslings with powerful spice and pronounced minerality. In Oppenheim and Alsheim, by contrast, loess, loam and limestone soils tend to dominate – a good basis for Burgundian varieties and elegant Rieslings.
Style & Philosophy
Rappenhof focuses on dry, precise wines with a clear sense of origin. The range follows the VDP pyramid: estate wines, village wines from Alsheim, Oppenheim and Nierstein, and Grosses Gewächs from the top sites. The young generation has noticeably sharpened the style – more focus on site, less intervention.
In the vineyard, the estate says it does without herbicides and artificial fertilisers and has reduced tillage between the rows. Alongside Riesling, the Burgundian tradition remains a second pillar: the share of Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc and other Burgundian varieties has grown considerably over the decades.
Notable Sites & Wines
Among Rappenhof's best-known wines and sites are:
- Pettenthal Riesling GG – Grosses Gewächs from the Roter Hang in Nierstein, the estate's flagship
- Ölberg Riesling GG – also from Nierstein, powerful and spicy
- Nierstein Riesling and Oppenheim Riesling – village wines from the Rheinfront
- Alsheim Riesling Wurzelecht – from ungrafted vines in the home village
- Alsheim Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay – expressions of the long Burgundian tradition
- Dr. Muth Riesling – a classic in the range
In Alsheim the estate also farms sites such as Fischerpfad and Frühmesse.
Awards
Rappenhof regularly receives good ratings in guides such as Falstaff; from the 2023 vintage, Falstaff rated the Pettenthal Riesling GG at 94+ points. Above all, the development of recent years is remarkable: with the new generation, this traditional estate has repositioned itself as one of the exciting addresses on the Rheinfront.
