History

The decisive turn came with Jean-Claude Mas, who after years in the international wine trade started his own cellar and marketing in the year 2000.
Mas deliberately bought up abandoned or underrated estates and châteaux in the Languedoc and Roussillon, invested in cellars and vineyards and quickly built a portfolio spanning affordable brand wine to top crus. As a fourth-generation grower but first-generation estate bottler, he shaped a self-image that combines origin with modern craft – and within a few years made the Domaines Paul Mas an internationally sought-after name.

The historic core lies near Pézenas in the Hérault, where Château Paul Mas stands on the Ile de Conas estate. From here the estates spread across the entire Languedoc and into the Roussillon – one of France's most varied wine landscapes.
The Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers and mild winters, is ideal for ripening southern grape varieties. What matters is the range of soils: limestone and clay around Pézenas, schist and gravel in higher sites, cooler zones around Limoux for sparkling and fresh white wines. This geological diversity lets the Domaines Paul Mas choose the right terroir for every variety and style – from powerful reds to tense, fresh whites.
