Weingut Klumpp in Bruchsal is one of the leading organic and Pinot addresses of the Kraichgau in Baden. What began in 1983 with Ulrich and Marietta Klumpp on around half a hectare is today a family estate of roughly 35 hectares spread across more than 100 individual parcels – run by the sons Markus and Andreas Klumpp. The focus is firmly on the Pinot family: Pinot Noir, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris and Chardonnay, complemented by Riesling, Lemberger and St. Laurent. History
The estate's story begins in 1983, when Ulrich and Marietta Klumpp started out in Bruchsal with just around half a hectare of vines. Over the years the estate grew parcel by parcel and laid the foundation for its present reputation early on – above all through the switch to organic viticulture, for which it was certified as early as 1996.
The decisive step forward came with the next generation. Markus Klumpp, a graduate of Geisenheim University, joined in 2004 and has been responsible for the wines and cellar ever since. His brother Andreas Klumpp came on board in 2010 and looks after the vineyards and organisation. Together the brothers have sharpened the estate's Burgundian style, pushed quality steadily upwards and made Klumpp one of the most closely watched estates in Baden.
Location & Terroir
The estate lies in Bruchsal, northeast of Karlsruhe, in the Kraichgau – that gently rolling landscape between the Black Forest and the Odenwald that belongs to the Baden wine region. The climate is mild and relatively dry, marked by warm days and cool nights, which gives the grapes both ripeness and fresh acidity.
Decisive is the small-scale diversity of the soils: loess and loess loam over shell limestone and Keuper marl shape the character of the sites. Klumpp farms more than 100 individual parcels, which allows for very differentiated work – each site brings out its own expression. It is precisely this diversity that forms the basis for the estate's layered, parcel-precise style.
Style & Philosophy
Klumpp's style is clearly oriented towards Burgundy. In the vineyard the family consistently relies on reduced yields, careful handwork and organic farming; in recent years it has increasingly worked biodynamically. For the Pinot wines, selected French clones are used, chosen for finesse and structure rather than volume.
In the cellar the top wines age for many months in barrique, giving them depth, texture and ageing potential without masking the fruit. The result is precise, elegant wines with fine minerality. The range is organised into a clear quality pyramid of estate, village and single-vineyard wines, modelled on the VDP system and giving the drinker reliable orientation.
Notable Vineyards & Wines
The heart of the estate is the Pinot family, led by Pinot Noir along with Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris. The range is rounded out by Riesling, Chardonnay and the red varieties Lemberger (Blaufränkisch) and St. Laurent. Among the best-known sites are:

From these sites come the single-vineyard wines at the top of the pyramid – layered, long-lived wines that precisely mirror the character of their terroir.
Awards
Klumpp has for years been among the consistently highly rated estates of Baden. Gault&Millau lists the estate with three red grapes, Eichelmann awards it four stars – in 2014 Klumpp was singled out there as a riser and discovery of the year, among other honours. Falstaff also rates the estate with three stars and awarded it the Pinot Gris Trophy in 2021; Vinum lists it with three stars. Klumpp is thus undisputedly one of the leading organic and Pinot estates of the Kraichgau.
