Zusammenfassung
Weingut Balthasar Ress in Hattenheim is one of the traditional addresses of the Rheingau. Since its founding in 1870 the estate has been continuously in family hands and is run today in the fifth generation by Christian Ress. Across roughly 55 hectares – around 90% planted to Riesling – it produces clean, mineral wines from dry to nobly sweet. What makes the estate special is the combination of origin and signature: its own Schloss Reichartshausen monopole, VDP membership since 1989 and, since around 2016, a consistent switch to organic viticulture. The style is cool, delicate and built around the fine acidity of the Rheingau.
Geschichte
The estate's roots reach back to 1870, when the trained butcher Balthasar Ress opened an inn with a wine tavern and guest rooms in Hattenheim. From these beginnings a dedicated wine estate grew over the generations. After the First World War Carl Ress expanded the business, and his successor Paul Ress enlarged the portfolio of sites in the 1950s – among them parcels on the Rüdesheimer Berg.
A formative figure in more recent history was Stefan Ress, who modernised the estate and long played a leading role in the VDP. Under him Balthasar Ress was admitted to the VDP in 1989. His son Christian Ress joined the family business in 1999 after stints at home and abroad, became co-owner alongside his father in 2004 and took over operational leadership in 2010. Under him the estate converted to organic viticulture from around 2016 and sharpened its focus on origin and a fine, cool style.
Lage & Terroir
Balthasar Ress lies in the heart of the Rheingau, the wine region stretching along the right bank of the Rhine between Wiesbaden and Rüdesheim. Its geography is distinctive: here the Rhine makes a wide bend and flows from east to west over a long stretch, so the slopes face south towards the river. The broad watercourse reflects light and softens the climate, while the Taunus hills at their back shield the vines from cold northern winds.
The soils are varied: from deep loess and loam through marl to quartzite and slate on the Rüdesheimer Berg. This range is mirrored in the wines – from full and spicy to taut and mineral. The Schloss Reichartshausen monopole near Oestrich sits right on the Rhine on sandy, alluvial soils and yields approachable, finely fruity Rieslings.
Stil & Philosophie
The estate's style is deliberately cool and delicate: clean fruit, lively acidity and the mineral origin of the Rheingau take centre stage rather than opulence or oak. The Rieslings cover the whole spectrum – from dry estate wine through village and single-vineyard wines to the classic Prädikat levels Kabinett, Spätlese, Auslese and the rare nobly sweet peaks.
Since around 2016 Balthasar Ress has worked organically: cover crops, the avoidance of chemical-synthetic pesticides and gentle soil care are intended to strengthen the vitality of the vineyards and carry their origin into the wines as faithfully as possible. The Riesling range is complemented by Pinot Noir and a little Pinot Blanc. Over the years the estate has also dared to take on adventurous projects – such as Germany's northernmost vineyard on the island of Sylt.
Bekannte Lagen & Weine
The range is graded along the VDP vineyard pyramid: from estate wine through village wine and Erste Lage to Große Lage. Among the best-known sites and wines are:
- Schloss Reichartshausen – the estate's monopole, planted exclusively with Riesling
- Hattenheimer Schützenhaus – a classic Hattenheim Riesling site
- Hattenheimer Nußbrunnen – for fine, mineral Rieslings
- Oestricher Doosberg – spicy, full-bodied wines
- Rüdesheimer Berg – steep sites of quartzite and slate at the western edge of the Rheingau
The palette runs from dry Riesling through off-dry and fruity-sweet Kabinett and Spätlese wines to nobly sweet rarities, plus a Pinot Noir.
Auszeichnungen
As a long-standing VDP member, Balthasar Ress regularly earns strong ratings in the leading German wine guides and tastings. The wines – above all the Rieslings from the Erste and Große Lage parcels and the Schloss Reichartshausen monopole – count among the reliable ambassadors of the classic, cool Rheingau style. With its early switch to organic viticulture, the estate is also one of the Rheingau's pioneers in sustainability.
