Discover the Rheingau: where Riesling is at home. History, top estates, classification and the best vineyard sites at a glance.

The Home of Elegant Riesling

The Rheingau is one of Germany's most prestigious wine-growing regions. On just 3,200 hectares, some of the world's finest Rieslings are produced here — elegant, mineral and of unique finesse.

Geography & Terroir

The Rheingau benefits from a uniquely advantageous geographical position:

  • Location: Between Wiesbaden and Lorch on the Rhine
  • Special feature: The Rhine flows westward for 30 km here
  • Aspect: South-facing slopes with optimal sun exposure
  • Soils: Slate, quartzite, loess and loam

"The Rheingau is the Côte d'Or of Riesling." – Hugh Johnson

Climate

The mild climate makes all the difference:

  • Protected by the Taunus hills to the north
  • The Rhine as a heat reservoir
  • Long, sunny autumn days
  • Ideal conditions for slow ripening
