Weingut Bärenhof lies in Ungstein, a district of Bad Dürkheim on the German Wine Route (Deutsche Weinstraße). It is a family business in the truest sense: four generations of the Bähr family live and work together on the farm, and the family's roots in the village reach back to the 16th century. Across around 20 hectares of its own vineyards in top Ungstein sites, the estate produces mostly dry wines from Riesling, Weißburgunder (Pinot Blanc), Grauburgunder (Pinot Gris) and Sauvignon Gris. Much of the production is sold directly from the estate – and eight consecutive regional honour prizes plus the federal honour prize in 2014 show that the Bärenhof works at a consistently high level.
History
The story of the Bähr family in Ungstein begins long before the winery itself: it can be traced in the village back to 1590, when the ancestor Philipp Bär settled here. The „h" in the family name was only added at the beginning of the 19th century. The founding of the estate is usually dated to 1791 – sources differ on this point, so the figure is better read as a guide than as an exact date.
For long stretches the business did not live from its own bottled wine. Until 1907 the wine was sold mainly as cask wine, and after that the grapes went to the local cooperative until 1973. Only with the 1973 vintage did Günter Bähr begin to vinify and market the wine himself – the step that turned a grape supplier into a wine estate.
Today the main responsibility rests with Jürgen Bähr, who has shaped both vineyard and cellar since qualifying as a viticultural technician in 2004 and who, according to sources, represents the 17th generation of the family in the village. Senior owner Günter Bähr remains involved; in total four generations live together on the farm.
Location & Terroir
Ungstein sits in the Mittelhaardt on the German Wine Route, immediately north of Bad Dürkheim. The Haardt escarpment, the eastern edge of the Palatinate Forest, shields the vineyards to the west and, together with the sheltered position, creates a mild and sun-rich climate – one of the warmest winegrowing zones in Germany.
Characteristic of the Ungstein vineyards is their pronounced diversity of soils: conditions change markedly over short distances, and that is exactly what the estate matches its variety choices to. Riesling goes where it keeps freshness and structure; the Pinot varieties get the parcels that give them substance and richness. No reliable detail is available on the soils of the individual sites – what matters anyway is that the family has known its parcels for generations.
Style & Philosophy
The Bärenhof is not an estate that seeks attention through experiments. The style is craftsmanlike, clear and dry: by far the largest part of the range consists of dry still wines, structured by the classic German Prädikat levels Kabinett, Spätlese and Auslese. Alcohol-free versions round out the programme – a concession to customers who increasingly ask for them.
The second pillar of the philosophy is direct sales from the estate. If you want to buy the wines, you generally come to Ungstein – which keeps the distance between producer and customer short and makes the business independent of the trade. That four generations work together here is not a marketing label but everyday practice: experience and the next generation quite literally sit at the same table.

Documented wines from the estate include the Ungstein Honigsäckel Weißburgunder Spätlese trocken and the Ungstein Michelsberg Riesling Auslese trocken – two bottles that show the estate's ambition for dry Prädikat wines. Alongside them stands a cuvée named „Lebenslang" trocken, or „lifelong": a name that can hardly have been chosen by chance.
Awards
For a family business of this size, the record is remarkable: eight consecutive regional state honour prizes between 2008 and 2015, plus the federal honour prize in 2014 and a place among the DLG top-100 producers – the exact ranking differs from source to source. In 2015 the Bärenhof also won the Goldene Liga at the Berliner Wein Trophy and has been repeatedly awarded at the AWC Vienna; accounts of its current star rating there vary.
