Lombardy - Franciacorta, Valtellina & Alpine Elegance

Summary / At a Glance

Lombardy is Italy's economic and financial capital (Milan), but also a fascinating wine region with alpine influences. Two areas stand out: Franciacorta — Italy's finest sparkling wine region using the Champagne method — and Valtellina — alpine Nebbiolo wines from steep terraces.

Lombardy combines tradition with innovation: Franciacorta produces modern, elegant sparkling wines (often more expensive than Champagne), while Valtellina yields rustic, characterful Nebbiolo wines from extreme sites.

Geography and Climate

Lombardy stretches from the Alps in the north to the Po Plain in the south. The wine-growing areas lie:

  • Valtellina: Alps, 300–700 m altitude, steep terraces
  • Franciacorta: Hills south of Lake Iseo, 200–500 m
  • Oltrepò Pavese: Apennine foothills, 150–450 m
  • Lugana: Southern shore of Lake Garda, Mediterranean

The climate is extremely diverse: alpine in Valtellina, temperate-continental in Franciacorta, Mediterranean on Lake Garda.

Grape Varieties

Franciacorta — Champagne Method

Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Blanc form the basis for Franciacorta DOCG:

  • Metodo Classico: Bottle fermentation, minimum 18–60 months on the lees
  • Styles: Brut, Extra Brut, Satèn (white wines only, creamy), Rosé
  • Character: Fine bubbles, brioche, nuts, citrus, mineral

Valtellina — Nebbiolo (Chiavennasca)

Nebbiolo is called Chiavennasca here and produces alpine, rustic wines:

  • Valtellina Superiore DOCG: 5 sub-zones (Sassella, Grumello, Inferno, Valgella, Maroggia)
  • Sforzato di Valtellina DOCG: Passito style, dried grapes, powerful (15%+ alcohol)
  • Character: Cherry, alpine herbs, earthy notes, high acidity

Lugana — Trebbiano di Lugana

On the southern shore of Lake Garda: fresh, mineral white wines with citrus and almond aromas.

Wine Styles

Franciacorta DOCG

  • Non-Vintage: Fresh, accessible, 18 months on the lees
  • Millesimato (Vintage): More complex, 30 months on the lees
  • Riserva: 60 months on the lees, top quality
  • Satèn: White wines only, creamy, lower pressure

Valtellina Superiore DOCG

  • Sassella: Elegant, fine-boned
  • Grumello: Powerful, structured
  • Inferno: Intense, "hellishly" warm
  • Valgella: Soft, accessible
  • Maroggia: Rare, powerful

Sforzato di Valtellina DOCG

  • Passito style: Dried grapes, concentrated, 14–16% alcohol

Challenges and Future

  • Franciacorta: Competition from Champagne, high prices (40–150 euros)
  • Valtellina: Extreme sites, manual labour, shortage of young workers
  • Climate change: Valtellina benefits (better ripeness), Franciacorta at risk (heat)

My Personal Recommendation

Favourite winery: Bellavista for Franciacorta — the "Gran Cuvée" is elegant, complex, Champagne level. Ar.Pe.Pe for Valtellina — rustic, authentic Nebbiolo wines.

Entry point: Franciacorta Brut (30–45 euros), Valtellina Superiore Sassella (25–35 euros)

Tasting tip: Visit Franciacorta — modern wineries with architectural ambition. Or: Valtellina — breathtaking alpine landscape, steep terraces.

Gastronomy: Franciacorta with Risotto alla Milanese, Valtellina Nebbiolo with Bresaola (air-dried beef), Pizzoccheri (buckwheat pasta).

Lombardy showcases Italy's diversity: modern elegance (Franciacorta) and alpine tradition (Valtellina). Salute!
