Summary
Weingut Zehnthof Luckert in Sulzfeld am Main is one of the defining addresses for Silvaner in Franconia – and therefore for German white wine culture as a whole. The Luckert family farms around 17 hectares exclusively within Sulzfeld, organically and certified by Naturland. In the cellar, everything is fermented spontaneously and aged in traditional large wooden casks. The result is dry, chalk-driven wines with a clear sense of origin, wines that helped establish Silvaner's reputation as a serious, age-worthy variety. The estate is housed in the former prince-bishop's tithe court of 1558 in the middle of the village.
History
The estate takes its name from the building: the Zehnthof in Sulzfeld am Main dates back to 1558 and once served the Würzburg prince-bishops' administration as a collection point for the tithe, the peasants' payment in kind. Theo Luckert acquired the historic property in 1970, giving the estate the name it carries today.
The family's winegrowing tradition is older still. As early as 1955 the estate joined the Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter (VDP) – an unusually early membership for a small family operation, and a sign of how seriously the work was taken from the start. What had been a sideline for the parents' generation became a full-time business in the 1960s.
Today the brothers Wolfgang and Ulrich Luckert run the estate together with their families. Wolfgang Luckert trained at the Bürgerspital in Würzburg, Ulrich Luckert at the Fürstlich Castell'sches Domänenamt. The next generation is already in charge in the cellar: Philipp Luckert completed part of his training with Paul Fürst in Bürgstadt and today is responsible for winemaking as cellar master. From the mid-2000s the family converted step by step to organic viticulture; the estate is now certified by Naturland.
Location & Terroir
Sulzfeld am Main lies southeast of Würzburg in a bend of the river Main, at the heart of Franconian viticulture. The Zehnthof's vineyards lie exclusively within the Sulzfeld parish – a rare concentration that allows the family to know every parcel in detail.
The decisive factor is Muschelkalk, a shell limestone: chalky, stony soils that in Franconia stand for taut, saline and mineral whites, giving Silvaner structure and length rather than obvious fruit. The climate is continental – warm, dry summers, cold winters and marked day-night swings that sharpen the aromatics of the grapes. The slopes above the Main and the heat storage of the limestone deliver fully ripe fruit while preserving acidity.
Style & Philosophy
The estate's signature is deliberately restrained: as little as possible should happen in the cellar so that site and variety can speak. The white wines ferment spontaneously with yeasts from the vineyard and then mature for months in traditional large wooden casks, which contribute structure and gentle oxygen exchange without imposing oak aromas. There is no fining, sulphur is used sparingly, and part of the range is bottled unfiltered. The reds – above all Spätburgunder and Frühburgunder – are fermented on the skins and aged in small oak casks.
The real core of the philosophy is Silvaner. Where the variety was long dismissed as a simple everyday wine, Zehnthof Luckert treats it as a great white grape: low yields, late picking, long lees contact, ageing in wood. The fact that the family grows all four variants – yellow, green, red and blue Silvaner – is a rarity in Germany and at the same time a piece of living varietal conservation.
Notable Sites & Wines
The range follows the VDP pyramid, from estate and village wines up to the Große Gewächse. Among the most important sites and wines are:
- Sulzfelder Maustal – classified as VDP.GROSSE LAGE; source of the estate's Silvaner Großes Gewächs
- Sulzfelder Berg – VDP.ERSTE LAGE, historically also known by the parcel name Cyriakusberg
- Sulzfelder Sonnenberg – VDP.ERSTE LAGE, a warm, favoured site
- "Creutz" – a parcel of very old, partly ungrafted vines dating from the late 19th century, which lends its name to one of the estate's most distinctive Silvaners
- Sulzfelder Silvaner as VDP.ORTSWEIN – the accessible entry point into the house style
Alongside these come Riesling, Weißburgunder, Muskateller, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay, as well as Spätburgunder and Frühburgunder in smaller quantities.
Awards
Zehnthof Luckert has for years been listed among the top tier in the leading German wine guides. Eichelmann has awarded the estate five stars, Gault&Millau four and a half grapes, and the Vinum Weinguide four stars; at Falstaff and on the wein.plus portal, too, the estate ranks among the country's highest-rated producers. The Silvaners from the Maustal and the Creutz parcel in particular are regarded by critics as reference wines for just how much depth and ageing potential this long-underrated variety can develop on limestone.
