Summary
Cantina Tramin (German Kellerei Tramin, Italian Cantina Termeno) is today one of the best-known and highest-rated wineries in South Tyrol – and one of the finest wine cooperatives in all of Italy. Around 300 member families farm roughly 260 hectares around the village of Tramin on the South Tyrolean Wine Road, the very place that gave Gewürztraminer its name. The estate became famous above all for its aromatic, precise white wines – first and foremost the top Gewürztraminer "Nussbaumer". Cellar master Willi Stürz has shaped its unmistakable style since 1992, and with its striking modern architecture the winery has long been a landmark on the Wine Road.
History
The cooperative's roots reach back to 1898, when a wine cooperative was founded in Tramin on the initiative of the parish priest and member of parliament Christian Schrott. Schrott was strongly committed to viticulture in South Tyrol and thereby laid the foundation for an association that united the grapes of many small growing families under one roof.
Over the decades the winery grew into one of the flagships of South Tyrolean viticulture. The decisive leap to the quality summit came in the 1990s: in 1992 Willi Stürz joined as cellar master and consistently reoriented the work towards origin, precision and aromatics. In 2004 he was named "Winemaker of the Year" by the Italian wine guide Gambero Rosso – a milestone that cemented the cooperative's reputation far beyond Italy.
Location & Terroir
Tramin lies in the Unterland of South Tyrol, south of Bolzano and just a few kilometres from Lake Kaltern, right on the South Tyrolean Wine Road. The climate is marked by warm, dry days and distinctly cooler nights – the contrast that gives aromatic white wines their freshness, fragrance and tension.
The members' vineyards spread across the municipalities of Tramin, Auer, Montan and Neumarkt, ranging from the warmer valley floors up to altitudes well above 500 metres. This range of elevations, exposures and soils – from limestone to volcanic weathered ground – is the key to the estate's style: it allows each variety to be planted where it finds its best expression, and lets Gewürztraminer ripen to full spice and finesse in the higher, cooler hillside sites.
Style & Philosophy
Cantina Tramin's signature is that of an aromatic yet never clumsy style of wine. With the Gewürztraminer in particular – the estate's flagship variety – it pulls off the balancing act between an intense scent of roses, lychee and exotic fruit on the one hand and freshness, structure and drinkability on the other. The altitude and cool nights are as decisive here as the precise work in vineyard and cellar.
Alongside Gewürztraminer, Weißburgunder (Pinot Blanc) and Chardonnay are central, complemented by Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon and aromatic reds such as Lagrein and Pinot Nero. Across every line – from the fresh regional wines to the great selections – runs the aim of bringing origin clearly and faithfully into the glass.
Notable Sites & Wines
The range is clearly tiered: from accessible regional wines through village wines to the prestigious selections. Among the estate's best-known wines are:
- Nussbaumer – the iconic Gewürztraminer from the hillside site of the same name above the winery, dense, spicy and age-worthy
- Epokale – a Gewürztraminer laid down to mature in a disused mine tunnel
- Further celebrated selections from Weißburgunder, Chardonnay and Sauvignon
These wines regularly rank among the highest-rated in South Tyrol and have made Tramin an international byword for great Gewürztraminer.
Awards
Cantina Tramin has for years consistently collected top marks in the leading Italian wine guides (Gambero Rosso, Vitae, Bibenda) and international tastings. The "Nussbaumer" is regularly celebrated as one of the best Gewürztraminers in the world, and cellar master Willi Stürz has been named "Winemaker of the Year". The cooperative is today undisputedly regarded as one of the reference addresses for aromatic white wine from South Tyrol.
