Summary

Weingut Roberto Sarotto is a family-run azienda agricola based in Neviglie in the heart of the Langhe in Piedmont. Across around 90 hectares spread over several Langhe municipalities and the Gavi area, the estate covers almost the entire Piedmontese repertoire: Barolo and Barbaresco, Barbera d'Alba, Langhe Arneis and Nebbiolo, Gavi, Moscato d'Asti and Alta Langa. The family's winegrowing tradition reaches back to 1870; today's direction was shaped by Roberto Sarotto from 1984. The result is variety-typical, accessible wines alongside ambitious cru bottlings.

History

The Sarotto family's roots in winegrowing reach back to 1870, when the grapes were largely sold to cellars in the area, with an early focus on Dolcetto d'Alba. The decisive turning point came in 1984, when Roberto Sarotto graduated from the wine school in Alba and reoriented the estate. About seven years later, the purchase of a roughly 20-hectare property in the Barolo area marked an important step; in the following years cru sites in Neive were added for the Barbaresco. In the early 1990s, Roberto and his wife Aurora also expanded the estate into the Gavi area, where a second cellar was established.

Location & Terroir

The estate lies in the Langhe, the hilly heartland of Piedmontese quality wine southeast of Alba. The soils consist mainly of calcareous marls and sandstones which – depending on the municipality and exposure – give Nebbiolo finesse and structure. The continental climate, with warm summers, cool nights and the autumn fogs (nebbia) typical of the region, favours the slow, complete ripening of Nebbiolo, while in the Gavi area cooler, sandy-calcareous soils shape the fresh Cortese white.

Style & Philosophy

Sarotto combines modern, precise cellar work with the aim of clearly expressing the origin of each site. The wines are clean, fruit-focused and variety-typical; the top Barolo and Barbaresco age in wood and show the combination of tannin, acidity and aromatics characteristic of Nebbiolo. Alongside the great reds, the estate maintains a broad programme from fresh whites to aromatic Moscato and traditional-method Alta Langa.

Notable Sites & Wines

The range is organised by origin. Among the well-known wines and sites are:

  • Barolo from the municipalities of Novello (including Bergera-Pezzole) and Barolo
  • Barbaresco from cru sites in Neive such as Gaia Principe, Currà and San Cristoforo
  • Barbera d'Alba and Langhe Nebbiolo
  • Gavi del Comune di Gavi from the Zerbetta area
  • Moscato d'Asti and Alta Langa (sparkling wine)

Awards

Roberto Sarotto is regularly reviewed in the Italian wine guides and international tastings and, with its broad, origin-clear range, has earned a firm place among the well-known producers of the Langhe. The estate's own cru sites in Barolo and Barbaresco underline its commitment to quality.
