Summary
Weingut Philipp Kuhn in Laumersheim is one of the most versatile and highly rated addresses in the Pfalz. Across around 40 hectares it produces both powerful, mineral Rieslings from the great Laumersheim sites and internationally noticed Pinot Noir and red cuvées. This double strength in white and red wine makes the estate special within Germany. Philipp Kuhn took over the family business, grown over generations, in 1992 at just twenty years old and within a few years shaped it into one of the region's most dynamic estates – honoured with the German Red Wine Award and the German Riesling Award, and a VDP member since 2008.
History
The Kuhn family's roots in Laumersheim reach back more than three hundred years; as a winegrowing business the estate can be traced to the 17th century. For generations it was a typical Palatinate family farm that sold other agricultural produce alongside wine.
The decisive turning point came in 1992, when Philipp Kuhn took over responsibility for vineyard and cellar at just twenty years old. He focused the estate rigorously on quality, reduced yields, invested in the best sites and step by step built a range that sets benchmarks in both white and red wine. His talent was recognised early: Kuhn was the first winemaker from the VDP talent programme, launched in 2003, to be later admitted to the association as a full member – this happened in 2008. In just a few years the estate thus developed from a regional business into a fixture of the German top tier.
Location & Terroir
Laumersheim lies in the north of the Pfalz, near the border with Rheinhessen and slightly off the classic Mittelhaardt. The climate is mild and dry, marked by warm summers and comparatively low rainfall – ideal conditions for fully ripe white and red grapes.
The diversity of soils is defining. The top site Steinbuckel is shaped by heavy, calcareous clay and marl soils that yield powerful, long-lived wines. The Kirschgarten combines limestone and loam and is considered one of the best red-wine sites in the Pfalz, yet it also produces superb Riesling. Added to this are loess soils in the surrounding parcels, which deliver full, accessible white wines. This small-scale geological variety allows the estate to draw out an unmistakable character from each site.
Style & Philosophy
Philipp Kuhn stands for an uncompromising quality philosophy that begins in the vineyard: low yields, healthy fruit and hand work in the best sites. The Rieslings are dry, mineral and taut, with clear fruit and great ageing potential – wines that precisely reflect the cool, limestone-marked terroir of Laumersheim.
With red wine the estate's second great strength shows. The Pinot Noirs are made in the Burgundian manner, often in barrique, combining fruit with structure and depth. In addition there are ambitious red cuvées from Cabernet, Merlot and other varieties, which stand behind the estate's several German Red Wine Awards. The range is rounded out by the other Pinot varieties Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris and Chardonnay, as well as Sauvignon Blanc and a small sparkling-wine section.
Notable Vineyards & Wines
The range is clearly tiered: from accessible estate wines through village wines to the Grand Cru wines from the best sites. Among the estate's most important sites and wines are:
- Laumersheimer Kirschgarten – Grand Cru site for Riesling and Pinot Noir, one of the best red-wine addresses in the Pfalz
- Laumersheimer Steinbuckel – limestone and marl, source of powerful, long-lived Rieslings
- Großkarlbacher Burgweg – origin of expressive Rieslings
- Dirmsteiner Mandelpfad – another characterful parcel in the portfolio
- Red cuvées from Cabernet and Merlot, plus the Riesling Tradition as a popular entry point
These wines regularly rank among the highest-rated in the Pfalz – in both white and red.
Awards
Philipp Kuhn is one of the most successful estates in the Pfalz. It has won the German Red Wine Award and the German Riesling Award several times and consistently earns top marks in the leading wine guides such as Falstaff, Gault&Millau and Eichelmann. Admission to the VDP in 2008 finally confirmed the estate's leading position. Hardly any other winery in the region combines white and red wine expertise at such a high level – one reason why Philipp Kuhn is regarded as one of the most impressive success stories in recent Palatinate wine history.
