Summary
Weingut Markus Schneider in Ellerstadt is one of the best-known and most modern estates in the Palatinate. What Markus Schneider (born 1975) began on a small scale in a village barn in 1994 is today an internationally minded winery with around 90 hectares of vineyards and an annual production of roughly 800,000 bottles. The estate became famous above all for its red blend Black Print and for its bold, unconventional labels, which deliberately break with the classic Palatinate image. The style is concentrated, fruit-forward and strongly shaped by international grape varieties such as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah.
History
The Schneider family has lived in Ellerstadt for around 300 years, yet the estate's current reputation is the work of a single man. Markus Schneider, born in 1975, learned his craft in part at the renowned Palatinate estate Dr. Bürklin-Wolf and took the plunge into independence in 1994 – with around one hectare of vines and an improvised cellar in a village barn.
From these modest beginnings the estate grew rapidly. Schneider bet early on international grape varieties, modern cellar technology and confident marketing that broke with the conventions of the traditional Palatinate. Within a few years his name became one of the best-known brands in the German wine scene – carried by a young, wine-loving clientele and a clear, recognisable signature.
Location & Terroir
Ellerstadt lies in the district of Bad Dürkheim in the northern part of the Palatinate, not far from the German Wine Route. The climate is among the warmest and sunniest in Germany, which is what makes it possible to grow late-ripening international varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah at all – varieties that barely ripen in cooler German regions.
The estate's vineyards are spread across several neighbouring villages. Rather than putting individual top vineyards in the foreground, Schneider deliberately works with the broad potential of the region and composes his cuvées from it. The estate therefore sees itself less as a classic single-vineyard winery and more as a modern producer that brings terroir and grape varieties together into distinctive wine styles.
Style & Philosophy
Markus Schneider's style is modern, concentrated and fruit-forward. For the red wines the estate relies on long skin contact and pronounced barrel ageing, which give the wines density, structure and a fine oak spice. The result is powerful, internationally styled reds that differ clearly from the lighter, traditional Palatinate style.
Just as defining is the consistent focus on international grape varieties – from Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah to Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Viognier. Added to this is an unmistakable, bold label design that makes the wines recognisable on the shelf. This combination of wine style and presentation has turned Schneider into a brand in its own right.
Signature Wines
Unlike classic single-vineyard estates, Markus Schneider is consistently brand- and blend-driven. The focus is not on individual vineyard sites but on distinctive wines with high recognition value:
- Black Print – the best-known red blend and the estate's flagship: dense, fruit-forward and barrel-aged
- Ursprung – another characterful red blend from the estate
- Kaitui – a Sauvignon-Blanc-led white wine with a modern profile
The range is rounded out by further white and red wines from the estate's broad spectrum of varieties, from Weißburgunder and Grauburgunder to Blaufränkisch and Cabernet Franc.
Awards
The young estate's rise was accompanied by the trade press from early on: in 2003 "Der Feinschmecker" named Markus Schneider "Newcomer of the Year". Gault Millau followed in 2006 with the award as "Discovery of the Year" and in 2007 as "Riser of the Year". These accolades underlined early on that Schneider had succeeded in building one of the defining modern brands of the German wine landscape out of a village barn.
