Summary
Weingut Karl Haidle in Kernen-Stetten is one of the leading addresses in Württemberg. Across around 23 hectares in the Remstal, the estate makes precise, dry Rieslings and serious Lembergers, rounded out by Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Founded in 1949 by Karl Haidle, the estate has been refined over three generations; since 2014 Moritz Haidle has run it – farmed biodynamically and with an unmistakably young signature shaped by art and music. The flagship is the VDP Grand Cru Stettener Pulvermächer, a steep terraced site below the Y-Burg.
History
The estate was founded in 1949 by Karl Haidle. He began with a very small holding and, in a Remstal then strongly shaped by cooperatives, was among the first growers to bottle and market his own wine – something unusual for the region. After the founder's early death, his son Hans Haidle took over and made the estate widely known, above all for Riesling. In 1995 Karl Haidle was admitted to the VDP.
In 2014 the third generation took over with Moritz Haidle. Trained under renowned growers and with a degree from Geisenheim, he converted the estate consistently to organic and finally biodynamic farming (Demeter-certified since 2020), while bringing a young, independent signature to the estate.
Location & Terroir
The estate lies in Stetten in the Remstal, one of Württemberg's best-known wine valleys east of Stuttgart. The vineyards climb steep, south-west-facing slopes – in places over 60% gradient, terraced and workable only by hand. Decisive is the gritty sandstone (Kieselsandstein), which lends the Rieslings their clear, mineral character.
At the heart is the Stettener Pulvermächer, a VDP Grand Cru below the ruin of the Y-Burg. Old vines, poor soils and low yields form the basis here for the estate's Grosses Gewächs wines. The comparatively cool climate of the Remstal ensures freshness and fine acidity, giving the wines tension and ageing potential.
Style & Philosophy
Karl Haidle stands for a purist, origin-focused style. In the vineyard the work is biodynamic; in the cellar Moritz Haidle relies on spontaneous fermentation without cultured yeasts and on as little intervention as possible. The Rieslings are dry, precise and mineral, the Lembergers serious and long-lived – a counterpoint to the often opulent image of Württemberg reds of the past.
Notable is how Moritz Haidle links wine and pop culture: as a graffiti artist and musician, he designs labels himself and releases projects such as the Ritzling – a Riesling with its own design. In this way the estate combines craftsmanship with a fresh, young voice.
Notable Vineyards & Wines
The range runs from the estate wine to the Grosses Gewächs wines from the top sites:
- Stettener Pulvermächer – the VDP Grand Cru and flagship, Riesling and Lemberger as Grosses Gewächs
- Stettener Berge – source of powerful Lemberger
- other Remstal sites such as Mönchberg and Häder
- Ritzling – a Riesling with an independent, street-art-influenced design
The dry Rieslings and the Lembergers form the core, joined by Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and sparkling wine.
Awards
Karl Haidle is regularly listed among the best estates in Württemberg by the leading German wine guides. Its Lembergers in particular have been honoured several times at the German Red Wine Award, and the Grosses Gewächs wines from the Pulvermächer count among the sought-after wines of the region. Beyond the wines, Moritz Haidle has given the estate a distinctive profile through his blend of biodynamics, art and music, helping to renew the reputation of Württemberg fine wine among a younger audience.
