Summary
Jean Geiler is the brand of the Cave Vinicole d'Ingersheim, a winegrowing cooperative based in Ingersheim, right on the doorstep of Colmar in Alsace. Founded in 1926, it is today one of the major players in Alsatian wine: around 200 winegrowing families farm roughly 400 to 470 hectares of vines in the Haut-Rhin, including parcels in ten Grand Cru sites such as Florimont, Sommerberg, Brand, Hengst and Mambourg. The range stretches from accessible varietal wines through terroir and Grand Cru wines to Vendanges Tardives and Sélection de Grains Nobles, with a strong focus on Crémant d'Alsace. The cooperative owes its name to the preacher and humanist Johannes Geiler von Kaysersberg – a commitment to Alsatian culture that also shapes the centenary celebrated in 2026.
History
The cooperative came into being in 1926, at a time when Alsatian winegrowing was seeking a fresh start after the First World War, the return to France and the aftermath of phylloxera. A group of Ingersheim growers – 16 or 36 founding members, depending on the source – joined forces as the Cave Vinicole d'Ingersheim to press, store and market their grapes together. For small family businesses this was often the only way to push back against the price pressure of the trade.
Over the decades the cooperative grew together with the neighbouring villages, and in the 1980s it gave its wines a name with real resonance: Jean Geiler, after Johannes Geiler von Kaysersberg (1445–1510). The theologian, who grew up in nearby Kaysersberg, was the most famous preacher at Strasbourg Cathedral and is regarded as a leading figure of Alsatian humanism – a patron through whom the cooperative deliberately places itself in the region's cultural history.
Today Jean Geiler counts around 200 member families and some 65 employees and is reckoned among the five big players in the Alsatian wine business. For its centenary in 2026 the house presented a new visual identity – while expressly holding on to the cooperative values of its founding years.
Location & Terroir
Ingersheim lies at the mouth of the Munster valley, where the Fecht river leaves the Vosges and enters the Rhine plain, just a few kilometres northwest of Colmar. The area is one of the driest in France: the Vosges intercept the Atlantic rain clouds, so that Colmar and its surroundings often receive only around 450 millimetres of rainfall a year. Plenty of sunshine, a semi-continental climate with warm summers and cool nights, and a long, dry autumn allow white wines with ripe fruit and lively acidity – and, in good years, the noble rot needed for Vendanges Tardives and Sélection de Grains Nobles.
The members' parcels are spread across a mosaic of soils typical of Alsace: granite on the steep slopes of Sommerberg, Brand and Wineck-Schlossberg, marl and limestone in Florimont, Hengst, Mambourg and Marckrain, plus limestone conglomerates and pebbles in Eichberg and Pfersigberg. This juxtaposition within a small area is why a single cooperative can produce Riesling in such different guises – taut and mineral from granite, powerful and spicy from marly limestone.
Style & Philosophy
As a cooperative, Jean Geiler pools the grapes of many small growers and has to reconcile two demands: reliability across the range and profile at the top. The base is formed by single-varietal Alsace wines from the seven classic grapes, which make the fruit-driven, mostly dry Alsatian style accessible. Above them stand the terroir and Grand Cru wines, where the cooperative puts origin in the foreground – Riesling from the granite of the Sommerberg, Gewürztraminer from the marly limestone of the Florimont.
A second pillar is Crémant d'Alsace, produced by classic bottle fermentation and offered in several styles – Brut, Prestige, Rosé, Demi-Sec and as the anniversary cuvée '1926'. Added to this is a dedicated organic range of wines and Crémants from the organically or biodynamically farmed member holdings, as well as the sweet specialities of the 'Collection Douceurs' with Vendanges Tardives and Sélection de Grains Nobles.
A visible symbol of the cellar tradition is the great oak foudre with a capacity of around 354 hectolitres, regarded as the largest cask of its kind in the Rhine valley. The cooperative also runs a small winegrowing museum at its headquarters and opens its rooms for exhibitions and events.
Notable Vineyards & Wines
Jean Geiler has parcels in ten Grand Cru sites in the area, covering almost the entire spectrum of Alsatian terroirs:
- Florimont (Ingersheim/Katzenthal) – marly-limestone, stony soil; home of powerful, spicy Gewürztraminer
- Sommerberg (Niedermorschwihr/Katzenthal) – granite slopes of up to 45 degrees at around 400 metres; Riesling of great freshness and minerality
- Brand (Turckheim) – two-mica granite in a sun-drenched position, the 'land of fire' of Alsace; Riesling and Pinot Gris
- Wineck-Schlossberg (Katzenthal/Ammerschwihr) – granite site in a sheltered microclimate, documented as early as the 13th century
- Kaefferkopf (Ammerschwihr) – recognised as the 51st Grand Cru in 2007; Gewürztraminer, Pinot Gris and Riesling, also as a blend
- Hengst (Wintzenheim) – marly limestone; concentrated, spicy wines with power
- Mambourg (Sigolsheim) – calcareous soils with maximum sun exposure; great Gewürztraminer
- Marckrain (Bennwihr/Sigolsheim), Eichberg and Pfersigberg (Eguisheim) – limestone and marl soils for Pinot Gris and Gewürztraminer
Alongside these, the Crémants d'Alsace and the nobly sweet Vendanges Tardives from Pinot Gris and Gewürztraminer carry the reputation of the house.
Awards
Jean Geiler has been a regular presence for years in the Guide Hachette des Vins, where numerous wines have been awarded stars – most recently a Pinot Gris Vendanges Tardives 2015 and a Gewürztraminer Vendanges Tardives 2022. The Crémants and varietal wines also regularly win medals at national competitions such as the Concours Général Agricole in Paris. Above all, though, the house stands for what a well-run cooperative can achieve: reliable Alsace wines across the range and serious Grand Cru wines at the top – at prices that make the great sites around Colmar affordable.
