Summary

Weingut Georg Gustav Huff is a family estate in Nierstein-Schwabsburg in Rheinhessen whose winegrowing tradition goes back to 1710. Today the siblings Stefan, Daniel and Stefanie Huff run the estate together and farm around 30 hectares of vines – about 5 hectares of them in the top sites of the Roter Hang (red slope). The flagships are precise, mineral Rieslings from Pettenthal, Hipping and Schloss Schwabsburg, complemented by Spätburgunder and Frühburgunder, white Pinot varieties and Sekt. The estate is a member of Maxime Herkunft Rheinhessen and one of the exciting names on the Roter Hang outside the VDP.

History

The Huff family has been growing wine in Schwabsburg, a small district of Nierstein, since 1710 – more than 300 years of tradition handed down through many generations. The estate is named after Georg Gustav Huff. It owes its present shape above all to Dieter and Helga Huff, who built up and expanded the estate over some five decades and still lend a hand today.

The next generation has since taken the helm: Stefan Huff is mainly responsible for the red wines – he trained on the Ahr and gained experience in Australia and Austria. Daniel Huff devotes himself to the Rieslings from the Roter Hang sites, while Stefanie Huff looks after customers, the wine shop and the estate's presence at trade fairs and tastings. With Jakob and Philipp Huff, the following generation is already growing into the business.

Location & Terroir

Schwabsburg lies immediately west of Nierstein, on the edge of the Roter Hang – the striking steep slope between Nierstein and Nackenheim that ranks among Germany's most famous Riesling terroirs. Its soils consist of the so-called Rotliegend, an iron-rich clay and sandy slate around 280 million years old that gives the vineyards their conspicuous red colour.

The red soil warms up quickly, the slopes face east and south-east towards the Rhine, and the river acts as a heat reservoir. The result is Rieslings with ripeness and spice, but also with taut acidity and a typical, almost salty minerality. Besides the roughly 5 hectares on the Roter Hang, the family farms further plots around Nierstein and Schwabsburg, mainly for Pinot varieties and the estate and village wines.

Style & Philosophy

The Huff family sees its work as a combination of tradition and modernity: the wines should be honest, authentic and clearly shaped by their origin, interpreting Rheinhessen in a contemporary way. In the cellar the focus is on varietal fruit, precision and site character – from the approachable estate wine to the age-worthy single-vineyard Riesling.

As a member of Maxime Herkunft Rheinhessen, the estate organises its range according to a three-tier origin pyramid: estate wines, village wines from Nierstein and single-vineyard wines. Membership of the association “Wein vom Roten Hang” underlines the focus on the special terroir right on the doorstep. Red wines are a second pillar: Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) and the rarer, earlier-ripening Frühburgunder are held in high regard. The range is rounded off by Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and a Pinot Sekt.

Notable Sites & Wines

The best-known wines come from the Nierstein single sites on the Roter Hang:

  • Pettenthal – a steep, powerful site right on the Rhine; home to the Rehbacher Steig Sommerseite parcel, source of the estate's top Riesling
  • Hipping – blessed with early sunshine, it yields fresh, mineral Rieslings, including the Hipping Alte Reben (old vines)
  • Schloss Schwabsburg – the home site around the Schwabsburg castle ruin, source of dry Rieslings and nobly sweet specialities up to Beerenauslese

In addition there is a Nierstein Riesling vom Roten Hang as village wine, the Nierstein Spätburgunder, the Niersteiner Frühburgunder and the Pinot Brut Sekt.

Awards

In recent years the estate has noticeably raised its profile. wein.plus named it Discovery of the Year in Rheinhessen, and wine guides such as Eichelmann, Falstaff and Vinum regularly rate the single-vineyard Rieslings at around 90 points and above. According to the estate, James Suckling awarded 95 points to the 2024 Riesling Pettenthal Rehbacher Steig Sommerseite, and nobly sweet Beerenauslesen from Schloss Schwabsburg have been rated up to 96 points in the Wine Advocate. At AWC Vienna 2026 the estate was honoured as a 5-star winery – proof that Georg Gustav Huff is one of the rising names on the Roter Hang.
