Summary

Weingut Franz Hirtzberger in Spitz is one of the defining estates of the Wachau – that narrow river landscape along the Danube known for some of the world's finest dry white wines. Across roughly 20 hectares of steep terraces, it produces powerful, long-lived wines from Grüner Veltliner and Riesling, above all the legendary Smaragd wines from the Singerriedel and Honivogl sites. As a founding member of Vinea Wachau, the family helped shape the region's unmistakable style: hand-harvesting, exclusively Wachau grapes and a clear commitment to origin. Hirtzberger stands for the cooler, western pole of the Wachau – and for white wines of international rank.

History

The estate's roots reach far back: the family's Lesehof in Spitz is one of the oldest working wine estates in the Wachau, with a history that can be traced to the 13th century. For generations the Hirtzberger family has farmed the steep terraces around Spitz.

The decisive imprint on the estate came from Franz Hirtzberger senior, who ran the winery from 1983 and brought it to the top of the region with an uncompromising commitment to quality. Together with other great names of the Wachau, he was among the co-founders of Vinea Wachau – the growers' association that, after a deep crisis for Austrian wine in the early 1980s, reset the course toward origin and quality. Today his son Franz Hirtzberger junior continues to shape the house style and carries the estate's signature forward.

Location & Terroir

Spitz lies at the far western end of the Wachau, where the Danube valley grows narrower and cooler. This location gives Hirtzberger's wines their distinctive freshness and finesse: the nights are cool, the ripening phases long, and the aromas develop slowly and in many layers.

The vineyards lie in steep terraces, built into the slope over centuries with dry-stone walls. The subsoil consists mainly of weathered primary rock – gneiss and mica schist – locally overlaid with sandy loess. This meagre stone forces the vines to root deeply and gives the wines their mineral, saline note. Among the famous sites are Singerriedel, Honivogl, Rotes Tor, Hochrain and Axpoint – each with its own character.

Style & Philosophy

At the heart of the estate lies the conviction that great wines are made in the vineyard. The family relies on rigorous hand-harvesting in several passes, low yields and a careful understanding of the geological and climatic particularities of each individual terrace. Only fully ripe grapes make their way into the Smaragd wines.

Stylistically, dry, precise wines take centre stage. The Grüner Veltliner is spicy and dense, with the peppery note typical of the variety; the Riesling is taut, mineral and remarkably age-worthy. The wines mature in the classic way in large oak casks and stainless steel, without any obtrusive oak – so origin stays in the foreground. The range is rounded out by Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay and Muscat.

Notable Sites & Wines

The range is clearly graded by origin and ripeness – from light Steinfeder and Federspiel wines to the great Smaragd bottlings. Among the most famous wines and sites are:

  • Riesling Singerriedel Smaragd – the estate's classic from the steep site directly behind the winery, often named one of Austria's finest Rieslings
  • Grüner Veltliner Honivogl Smaragd – powerful, deep and long-lived
  • Riesling Hochrain Smaragd and Riesling Axpoint – finely nuanced terrace wines
  • Grüner Veltliner Rotes Tor – a multi-layered wine from one of the best-known sites in Spitz

These wines regularly rank among Austria's highest-rated dry white wines and age effortlessly for many years.

Awards

Franz Hirtzberger's wines enjoy an international reputation and have earned top scores in the leading wine guides and tastings for decades. Many critics regard the Singerriedel Riesling as the benchmark for Wachau Riesling itself. Beyond individual awards, the estate's true distinction lies in its consistency: for generations Hirtzberger has reliably belonged to the very top of the Wachau – and has played a major part in the region being recognised worldwide as a home of great dry white wines.

Frequently asked questions

What is Weingut Franz Hirtzberger known for?

Weingut Franz Hirtzberger in Spitz is one of the Wachau's defining estates. It is famous above all for its dry, powerful Smaragd wines from Riesling and Grüner Veltliner – led by the Riesling from the steep Singerriedel terrace and the Grüner Veltliner Honivogl, both of which count among the icons of Austrian white wine internationally.

Where is Weingut Franz Hirtzberger located?

The estate is based in Spitz an der Donau, at the far western end of the Wachau in Lower Austria. The vineyards lie in the steep terraced sites around Spitz, including Singerriedel, Honivogl, Rotes Tor, Hochrain and Axpoint.

What do Steinfeder, Federspiel and Smaragd mean?

These are the three quality tiers of Vinea Wachau. Steinfeder denotes light, dry wines of around 11.5 percent alcohol, Federspiel the middle category, and Smaragd the ripest, most powerful dry wines with at least 12.5 percent. Hirtzberger bottles across all three tiers.

Is Hirtzberger a VDP estate?

No. The VDP is a German association. As an Austrian estate, Franz Hirtzberger is instead a founding member of Vinea Wachau and works to its strict rules – hand-harvesting, exclusively Wachau grapes, and the Steinfeder, Federspiel and Smaragd tiers.
