History
The story of Familia Torres begins in 1870, when the brothers Jaime and Miguel Torres Vendrell founded a wine house with an eye on export in Vilafranca del Penedès. The family built up international markets early on, laying the foundation for its later worldwide success.
The international breakthrough came with the fourth generation: from the 1960s and 1970s Miguel A. Torres modernised vineyard and cellar, introducing temperature control, stainless-steel tanks and international grape varieties. The bombshell came in 1979, when Mas La Plana beat renowned Bordeaux wines at a major Paris blind tasting and cemented the international reputation of Spanish fine wine. Today the fifth generation – Miguel and Mireia Torres Maczassek – runs the house and sets new priorities in sustainability and old grape varieties.
Location & Terroir
The heart of the company lies in the Penedès in Catalonia, between the Mediterranean and the ranges of the hinterland. This spread of altitudes and soils – from warmer coastal zones to cool high sites – allows a great variety of styles and grape varieties. Higher, cooler parcels are gaining importance as the climate changes.
Beyond the Penedès, Torres is present in many of Spain's best origins: in the Conca de Barberà (home of Grans Muralles below the Poblet monastery), in Priorat, in Rioja, in Ribera del Duero, Rueda and further regions. This geographical breadth is a hallmark of the house and the basis of its diverse range.
Style & Philosophy
Torres combines large scale with a clear commitment to quality and values. The wines are clean, accessible and true to variety; at the top end, precision, structure and origin come to the fore.
