Summary

The Elena Walch winery in Termeno is one of the best-known and highest-rated addresses in South Tyrol. Across around 55 hectares in the best sites around Termeno and Caldaro, it produces aromatic, precise white wines and fine reds – above all the world-famous Gewürztraminer from the Kastelaz single vineyard. What makes the estate unmistakable is its consistent terroir philosophy: with the two officially registered „Vigna“ sites, Kastelaz and Castel Ringberg, the house crafts uncompromising single-plot wines. Since Elena Walch took over the family estate in 1985, she has led it to the very top of the region; today her daughters Julia and Karoline run it in the fifth generation.

History

The estate's roots reach back several generations into the Walch family's South Tyrolean winegrowing tradition. The decisive turning point came in 1985: the Milanese architect Elena Walch took over responsibility for the family's vineyards and vines after her marriage – entering, as an outsider, an industry that was then strongly male-dominated.

Elena Walch overhauled the estate with determination. She tore out traditional Vernatsch (Schiava) vines and replaced them with quality-driven varieties such as Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon. At the same time she replaced the old pergola training system with Guyot pruning on a wire trellis – a prerequisite for lower yields and higher grape quality. In doing so she stood at the forefront of the quality revolution that turned South Tyrol from a bulk-wine region into a top wine area.

Since 2015, her daughters Julia and Karoline Walch have held operational responsibility and continue the family business in the fifth generation.

Location & Terroir

The home estate lies in Termeno (Tramin) on the South Tyrolean Wine Road – the village that gave the Gewürztraminer grape its name. Around Termeno and neighbouring Caldaro, the estate farms vineyards at very different altitudes and on highly varied soils, allowing a broad range of styles.

At its heart are the two single vineyards. The Vigna Kastelaz above Termeno is a rarity in South Tyrol thanks to its exclusively southern exposure and its extreme steepness of over 63% incline; the vineyard develops in terraces all facing south. The Vigna Castel Ringberg lies at Caldaro above Lake Caldaro and, at around 20 hectares, is the largest contiguous single vineyard in South Tyrol – owned by the Walch family for about a century. The mild, sun-drenched climate of southern South Tyrol and the differences in altitude provide ripeness and, at the same time, the cooling freshness that makes the wines so lively.

Style & Philosophy

The estate's style combines aromatic precision with clear provenance. At its centre lies the terroir philosophy: every site should reveal its unmistakable character. The registered „Vigna“ wines are the most consistent expression of this idea – single-plot wines from a precisely defined vineyard with a historic name.

The white wines – Gewürztraminer, Chardonnay, Pinot Bianco, Sauvignon and Pinot Grigio – are built for freshness, aromatics and structure. Among the reds, the indigenous Lagrein plays an important role, joined by Cabernet Sauvignon from the Castel Ringberg site. Sustainability and gentle work in the vineyard are a firm part of the estate's ethos. Since the 2022 vintage, the white wines from the Castel Ringberg single vineyard have matured in a new cellar right at their origin.

Notable Vineyards & Wines

The range is clearly tiered, from accessible estate wines through selections to the two great single vineyards. Among the best-known wines and sites are:

  • Gewürztraminer Vigna „Kastelaz“ – the estate's international benchmark, from the extremely steep south-facing slope above Termeno
  • Vigna „Castel Ringberg“ – the largest contiguous single vineyard in South Tyrol; among others Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Riesling, Pinot Grigio, Lagrein Riserva and Cabernet Sauvignon
  • Beyond the Clouds – a renowned Chardonnay cuvée of the estate
  • Variety-typical Pinot Bianco and Lagrein wines of South Tyrolean classics

These wines regularly appear on the best wine lists worldwide.

Awards

Elena Walch has stood at the forefront of South Tyrol's quality movement for decades and has earned both local and international esteem. The Italian wine guide Gambero Rosso crowned Elena Walch the „Queen of Gewürztraminer“, and the terroir wines from Kastelaz and Castel Ringberg have won numerous awards. The estate is today undisputedly one of South Tyrol's flagships and has done much to shape the international reputation of the region – and of Gewürztraminer.
