Summary
Weingut Dr. Hermann in Erden is one of the quiet greats of the Middle Mosel. Across around 17 hectares – almost exclusively Riesling – the Hermann family farms parcels in some of Germany's most famous steep sites: Erdener Prälat, Erdener Treppchen, Erdener Herzlei and Ürziger Würzgarten. What makes the estate special is the unusually high share of ungrafted vines, some of them more than a hundred years old. From these Christian Hermann makes a classic Mosel style: light, mouth-watering Kabinett wines just as much as nobly sweet Auslesen and Trockenbeerenauslesen that rank among the highest-rated wines of the region internationally. The estate has been a member of the VDP since January 2025.
History
Winegrowing has been a tradition in the Hermann family for several centuries. The estate as it stands today, however, only came into being in 1967: Christian Hermann's grandfather, the physician Dr. Hermann, founded an independent operation with the vineyards that fell to his branch of the family in an inheritance division of the Ürzig estate Joh. Jos. Christoffel. The prefix „Dr." still recalls that founder today – and is the reason the estate is occasionally confused with other Mosel producers to which it is connected neither by family nor by business.
In the following generation, Rudi Hermann expanded the vineyard holdings step by step. With the construction of a spacious, modern cellar the family moved the base of operations from Ürzig to neighbouring Erden. Today Christian Hermann runs the estate together with his wife Julia. He has consistently converted the vineyard work to organic farming – around ten hectares of steep slopes have been certified since 2020 – and cemented the house's reputation as a specialist for finely balanced residual sweetness. On 1 January 2025 Dr. Hermann was admitted to the Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter.
Location & Terroir
Erden lies on a tight bend of the Middle Mosel, between Ürzig and Kröv. The defining element here is Devonian slate, which occurs in two forms: blue slate at the surface and red, iron-rich weathered soil beneath. This combination gives the wines their typical tension between citrus freshness, herbal spice and a salty, smoky finish.
The steepness is decisive. The slopes fall towards the Mosel at gradients that in places exceed 60 percent and can only be worked by hand. Their south to south-west exposure, the reflection off the river and the heat storage of the slate ensure that Riesling ripens reliably even in such a northerly region – while keeping its acidity. Above the vineyards of Erden rise the striking red cliffs that give the famous Prälat and Treppchen sites additional shelter from the wind and radiated warmth.
Style & Philosophy
Dr. Hermann does not chase fashion but pursues a deliberately classic Mosel style. At the centre are wines with residual sweetness, made from a very late, selective harvest, whose sweetness is always carried by fine slaty spice and lively acidity. Alcohol levels stay low – a Kabinett from the Treppchen often sits well under 10% ABV.
The basis for this is the work in the vineyard: mechanical soil cultivation instead of herbicides, cover crops between the rows, moderate yields and several passes of hand-harvesting. The exceptionally high share of ungrafted vines – stocks never grafted onto phylloxera-resistant American rootstock – is a rarity in the region and delivers small-berried, concentrated fruit. In the cellar the family holds back: gentle pressing, long, cool fermentation and ageing in stainless steel as well as in the traditional Mosel Fuder cask. Dry estate Rieslings and a small quantity of Spätburgunder round out the range.
Notable Sites & Wines
The holdings are concentrated in the top sites around Erden and Ürzig, but reach into further Middle Mosel classics as well:
- Erdener Prälat – only around 1.5 hectares, blue over red slate, one of the warmest parcels on the Mosel
- Erdener Treppchen – the large, terraced site above the village; source of many of the estate's Kabinett and Spätlese wines
- Erdener Herzlei – origin of highly praised Spätlesen with gold capsule
- Ürziger Würzgarten – red slate and volcanic rock, spicy and exotic in expression
- Wehlener Sonnenuhr, Piesporter Goldtröpfchen and Brauneberger Juffer – classic Middle Mosel sites in the wider portfolio
Stylistically the range runs from the dry estate Riesling through the Prädikat levels Kabinett, Spätlese and Auslese to Beerenauslese and Trockenbeerenauslese, which are made only in suitable years and in tiny quantities.
Awards
The estate has been a fixture in the VINUM Weinguide Deutschland for years; the guide counts Christian Hermann among the best winegrowers on the Mosel. Internationally it is above all the nobly sweet wines that have caused a stir: the Wine Advocate awarded the top mark of 100 points four times over for the 2023 vintage – for Trockenbeerenauslesen from Erdener Prälat, Erdener Treppchen, Ürziger Würzgarten and Wehlener Sonnenuhr. Gault&Millau and the specialist report Mosel Fine Wines likewise regularly highlight the precision and raciness of the collection. Admission to the VDP in 2025 confirms this development at association level too.
