Summary

Bouchard Père & Fils is one of the oldest and most important wine houses in Burgundy. Founded in Beaune in 1731, it combines the role of a classic maison with that of a genuine domaine: with around 130 hectares of its own vineyards on the Côte d'Or – including roughly 12 hectares of Grand Cru and 74 hectares of Premier Cru – Bouchard is one of the largest vineyard owners in the region. Its headquarters and cellars are housed in the historic Château de Beaune. The main grape varieties are Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, and the house is famous for white wines from Montrachet and Corton-Charlemagne as well as for its red monopole parcel "Vigne de l'Enfant Jésus".

History

The story of the house begins in 1731, when Michel Bouchard founded a cloth business in Beaune. His son Joseph Bouchard turned increasingly to the wine trade and from 1775 acquired the first parcels of his own – the foundation of today's domaine. Towards the end of the 18th century the name "Bouchard Père & Fils" became established.

The French Revolution brought a decisive acquisition: in 1791, when church property was sold off, the house bought the vineyards of the Carmelite nuns of Beaune, including the famous "Vigne de l'Enfant Jésus". In 1820 Bernard Bouchard became owner of the Château de Beaune, a fortress built under King Louis XI whose bastions and underground passages have served as wine cellars ever since. In 1838 a parcel of just under 0.9 hectares in Montrachet was added.

The house remained in family hands for around 260 years. In 1995 the Bouchard family sold to the Champagne entrepreneur Joseph Henriot, who invested heavily in vineyards, cellars and quality. Since 2022, following the merger with Maisons & Domaines Henriot, Bouchard Père & Fils has been part of Artémis Domaines, the Pinault family's wine group.

Location & Terroir

Beaune lies at the heart of the Côte d'Or, the narrow, east-facing limestone slope along which Burgundy's great vineyards are strung like pearls. Bouchard's vineyards are spread across the Côte de Beaune and the Côte de Nuits – from Puligny-Montrachet and Meursault in the south, through Beaune, Volnay and Pommard, to the hill of Corton and further north.

The soils consist of limestone and marl in varying proportions, often mixed with scree and clay. The continental climate with cool nights provides fine acidity and aromatic precision. It is the fine-grained division into hundreds of "climats" – a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2015 – that creates the diversity of the wines: each parcel produces its own expression, which Bouchard deliberately vinifies separately.

Style & Philosophy

Bouchard focuses on site expression and precision rather than opulent extraction. The red wines from Pinot Noir show clear fruit, fine tannins and freshness; the white Chardonnays combine tension and minerality with careful ageing in oak. Winemaking takes place at the modern, gravity-flow Cuverie Saint-Vincent in Savigny-lès-Beaune, while ageing also happens in the cool vaults of the Château de Beaune, which also house an extensive collection of old vintages.

In the vineyard the house has consistently switched to near-natural farming in recent years; according to the house itself, the entire domaine has been certified organic since 2025. A clear distinction is made between the domaine wines from its own vineyards and the négociant bottlings made from purchased grapes.

Notable Sites & Wines

Among the house's best-known wines and vineyards are:

  • Beaune Grèves "Vigne de l'Enfant Jésus" (Premier Cru) – just under four hectares within the Premier Cru Les Grèves, solely owned since 1791; a silky, profound Pinot Noir
  • Montrachet (Grand Cru) – around 0.9 hectares, owned by the house since 1838
  • Chevalier-Montrachet (Grand Cru) – around 2.3 hectares, plus the special bottling Chevalier-Montrachet "La Cabotte"
  • Corton-Charlemagne and Corton (Grand Cru) – powerful whites and reds from the hill of Corton
  • Bonnes-Mares (Grand Cru) – red wine from the Côte de Nuits
  • Meursault Perrières (Premier Cru) – one of the most sought-after white Premiers Crus of the Côte de Beaune
  • Beaune du Château (Premier Cru) – the house's classic cuvée from several Beaune Premier Cru sites

Awards

The Grand Cru and Premier Cru wines of Bouchard Père & Fils regularly receive high scores from international wine critics and are regarded as reliable references for their respective sites. More than any single award, however, it is the heritage that counts: the "Vigne de l'Enfant Jésus", the Montrachet parcel and the listed Château de Beaune make Bouchard one of the most historic names in Burgundy – and an ideal starting point for discovering the diversity of the Côte d'Or.

Frequently asked questions

Is Bouchard Père & Fils a domaine or a négociant?

Both. Bouchard Père & Fils is a classic Burgundy maison that also buys in grapes as a négociant – yet with around 130 hectares it owns one of the largest vineyard domaines on the Côte d'Or. The domaine wines carry the word 'Domaine' on the label and come exclusively from the house's own vineyards.

What is the 'Vigne de l'Enfant Jésus'?

A parcel of just under four hectares within the Premier Cru Beaune Les Grèves. It once belonged to the Carmelite nuns of Beaune and was acquired by Bouchard in 1791 when church property was auctioned off. To this day the house is the sole producer of this famous Pinot Noir.

Who owns Bouchard Père & Fils today?

In 1995 the Bouchard family sold the house to the Champagne family Henriot. Since 2022, following the merger with Maisons & Domaines Henriot, Bouchard has belonged to Artémis Domaines, the Pinault family's wine group, which also includes Château Latour and Clos de Tart.

Where is Bouchard Père & Fils located?

The house is based at the Château de Beaune in Beaune, the wine capital of the Côte d'Or. Its own vineyards are spread across the Côte de Beaune and the Côte de Nuits.
