Summary
Baron Philippe de Rothschild is one of the most resonant names in Bordeaux – and unlike many great trading houses, there is a real, locatable estate behind it: Château Mouton Rothschild in Pauillac in the Médoc. On around 90 hectares it produces world-class, Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated reds that since 1973 have officially held the rank of Premier Grand Cru Classé. The house also includes the Pauillac estates Château Clerc Milon and Château d'Armailhac as well as the globally distributed négociant brand Mouton Cadet. What makes Mouton unmistakable is above all one of the Baron's ideas: since the 1945 vintage a different artist has designed the label every single year.
History
The roots reach back to 1853, when Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild acquired the Brane-Mouton estate in Pauillac and renamed it Mouton Rothschild. The real turning point, however, came in 1922: the barely 20-year-old Baron Philippe de Rothschild took over the previously somewhat neglected estate and made it his life's work.
As early as 1924 he made a revolutionary move, becoming one of the first in the Médoc to introduce full château bottling – until then wine usually left the estates in barrel. His greatest triumph came after decades of campaigning: in 1973 Château Mouton Rothschild was the only estate ever to be promoted to the rank of Premier Grand Cru Classé, joining the exclusive circle of First Growths. The Baron coined the motto "Premier je suis, second je fus, Mouton ne change" – First I am, second I was, Mouton does not change. After his death in 1988 his daughter Baroness Philippine carried the house forward; today it is in the hands of the next generation of the Rothschild family.
Location & Terroir
Château Mouton Rothschild lies in the commune of Pauillac, on the left bank of the Gironde at the heart of the Médoc. Pauillac counts among the greatest red-wine appellations in the world and is home to several First Growths in close proximity.
The soil is decisive: deep gravel terraces (grave garonnaise) resting over layers of clay, marl and limestone. These gravels store heat, release it to the vines at night and provide excellent drainage – ideal conditions especially for the late-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon. The mild, Atlantic-influenced climate and the proximity to water buffer temperature extremes. The interplay of gravel, Cabernet and long ageing produces the typically powerful, long-lived Pauillac style.
Style & Philosophy
Mouton Rothschild's grand vin is a textbook example of the classic Médoc style: Cabernet Sauvignon forms the backbone at around 80 percent, complemented by Merlot, small proportions of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. In their youth the wines are dense, tannic and reserved; only after years in the cellar do they reveal their full range of blackcurrant, cedar, graphite and fine spice. These are wines built to last for decades.
Alongside the red, the estate makes a remarkable dry white with Aile d'Argent, from Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon. Philosophically, Baron Philippe combined wine with art and top-level marketing from the very start – an attitude that still sets Mouton apart from many of its neighbours.
The artist labels
Perhaps its most famous hallmark: since the victory vintage of 1945 (with the "V" for Victory) the estate has commissioned a renowned artist each year to design the top panel of the label. The names include Pablo Picasso (1973), Andy Warhol (1975), Marc Chagall, Joan Miró, Salvador Dalí and many more. As their fee the artists receive cases of the wine. The labels are thus not merely packaging but a self-contained art collection – and highly prized by collectors.
Notable Vineyards & Wines

- Château Clerc Milon – Cinquième Cru Classé from Pauillac

Awards
As a Premier Grand Cru Classé, Château Mouton Rothschild ranks among the five highest-classified red-wine estates in Bordeaux and is consistently rated at the very highest level by critics and at international auctions. Its promotion to First Growth in 1973 remains to this day the only ever amendment to the legendary 1855 classification – a unique testament to the life's work of Baron Philippe de Rothschild.
