Summary
The Cave des Vignerons de Buxy is the most important winegrowers' cooperative of the Côte Chalonnaise in Burgundy. Founded in 1931, it now unites around 120 grower families who together farm roughly 1,100 hectares of vines between the Côte Chalonnaise and the Mâconnais. The cooperative is by far the leading producer of the white-wine appellation Montagny and a major player in Bourgogne Aligoté. With around 7 million bottles a year, it brings Burgundian Chardonnay and Pinot Noir to the world at accessible prices – from simple Bourgogne to Montagny Premier Cru.
History
The cooperative was born on 30 June 1931, when 98 growers from Buxy and the neighbouring villages joined forces. The Great Depression after 1929 had hit the wine trade hard; together, the small family estates wanted to process and sell their grapes themselves instead of depending on merchants. A few years later, in 1936, the neighbouring Montagny appellation was officially recognised – and the stories of the cooperative and this appellation have been closely intertwined ever since.
In 1968, Roger Rageot became the first professional director, and the cooperative modernised both its cellar and its marketing. On 24 January 1977, the Cave of Saint-Gengoux-le-National joined, extending the catchment area into the northern Mâconnais. Recent decades brought the premium range Millebuis (2014), the visitor centre La Maison Millebuis (2019) and a partnership with other Burgundian cooperatives in the Compagnie de Burgondie. Remarkably, the Cave has had only a handful of directors in more than 90 years – a sign of great continuity.
Location & Terroir
Buxy lies in the south of the Côte Chalonnaise, about 20 kilometres south-west of Chalon-sur-Saône. Here the hills of the Côte d'Or continue southwards, but in a looser pattern: vineyards are scattered across knolls and slopes between meadows, woods and pastures. The soils are mainly Jurassic limestone and marl – ideal for Chardonnay with fresh, mineral acidity.
The members' vineyards stretch roughly from Santenay in the north to Cluny in the south. Besides Montagny right on the doorstep, they include Givry, Mercurey and Rully on the Côte Chalonnaise and the Mâcon appellations further south. The slightly cooler, hilly terrain yields wines that are leaner and more approachable than many from the Côte d'Or.
Style & Philosophy
The cooperative's philosophy is simple: many small family estates pool their strengths to make Burgundy of reliable quality with modern cellar technology and professional marketing. Grapes are vinified separately by appellation and parcel – more than a hundred different vinifications per vintage are not unusual.
Stylistically, the focus is on freshness and fruit. The white Montagnys show citrus, white flowers and a fine chalky minerality; the Premiers Crus are partly aged in oak, gaining depth. The Aligoté is lively and crisp – the classic base for a Kir. The Pinot Noirs from Givry and Mercurey are red-fruited, juicy and approachable early. The cooperative is certified under the sustainability label Vignerons Engagés and uses lighter bottles, among other measures.
Notable Vineyards & Wines
The range is broad and covers numerous appellations. Key wines include:
- Montagny and Montagny Premier Cru – the heart of the range, with wines from classified climats such as Montcuchot, Les Coères and Les Chaniots
- Bourgogne Aligoté – one of the cooperative's great strengths
- Givry and Mercurey – Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from the Côte Chalonnaise
- Mâcon-Villages and Mâcon Saint-Gengoux – approachable Chardonnays from the south
- Millebuis and Buissonier – the cooperative's brand ranges, with Millebuis as the premium collection
Awards
Vignerons de Buxy wines are regularly reviewed in the Guide Hachette des Vins and win medals at French competitions. More important than individual prizes, though, is their role for the region: the cooperative is to the Côte Chalonnaise what La Chablisienne is to Chablis – an alliance that unites the growers of one terroir and makes their wines visible. For wine lovers, it offers one of the most affordable routes into genuine Burgundy.
