Summary

Weingut Trautwein in Bahlingen am Kaiserstuhl is one of the pioneers of organic viticulture in Baden. As early as 1980 – long before organic became a trend – Hans-Peter and Elfriede Trautwein converted their family estate to organic farming; since 2004 it has been run fully biodynamically according to Demeter. Across around 12 hectares, the estate produces mainly wines from the Pinot family: Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir), Grauburgunder (Pinot Gris), Weißburgunder (Pinot Blanc) and Chardonnay. Since 2019 the next generation, Anne-Christin and Christoph Trautwein, has led the estate, combining the organic ethos with a distinctly Burgundian-inspired style.

History

The Trautwein family has been growing wine in Bahlingen for many generations; according to trade sources, the family's roots in the village go back to the 17th century. The decisive step was taken by Hans-Peter and Elfriede Trautwein in 1980: they converted the estate to organic viticulture and were thus among the very first organic growers on the Kaiserstuhl – at a time when this was still considered an outsider position in the region.

The path was taken further in 2004, when the estate switched entirely to biodynamic farming according to Demeter. In 2013 it was admitted to the Renaissance des Appellations, the international association of top biodynamic growers founded by Loire winemaker Nicolas Joly. In 2019 the parents handed over responsibility to their daughter Anne-Christin and her husband Christoph Trautwein. Anne-Christin brings experience from Burgundy, Christoph viticultural knowledge from the Ahr.

Location & Terroir

Bahlingen lies on the north-eastern edge of the Kaiserstuhl, the extinct volcanic massif in the Upper Rhine Plain that ranks among the warmest and sunniest wine regions in Germany. The climate has an almost Mediterranean feel: plenty of sunshine, warm summers and long ripening periods that give the Pinot varieties ideal conditions.

The terroir is shaped by fertile loess deposited over volcanic rock. The loess stores water and warmth and produces harmonious, approachable wines, while the volcanic subsoil contributes spice and tension. According to estate profiles, the best parcels include the plots Fohberg, Hundsrück and Käsenthal around Bahlingen.

Style & Philosophy

At the heart of the work lies the idea of a reconciliation with nature. Biodynamic preparations, cover crops, composting and manual work are meant to foster living soils and resilient vines. The estate sees itself as a farm in the broadest sense: it includes a farm garden with vegetables, fruit and herbs, bread made from its own grain, and a community-supported agriculture scheme (Solawi).

In the cellar, Anne-Christin and Christoph Trautwein rely on gentle intervention and plenty of time. The wines are dry and built for depth, texture and aromatic complexity rather than showy fruit – a signature that makes the Burgundian influence of the young generation tangible. Alongside the Pinot varieties, the range includes smaller volumes of Muskateller, Riesling, Müller-Thurgau and other varieties, as well as a field blend.

Notable Sites & Wines

The range is divided into approachable estate wines and more ambitious bottlings above them from the best parcels. The focus is on:

  • Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) – the red flagship from the Kaiserstuhl, fine and spicy
  • Grauburgunder and Weißburgunder – classic Kaiserstuhl whites with richness and freshness
  • Chardonnay – Burgundy-inspired, with texture and length
  • Muskateller and a mixed blend for the aromatic side

The wines are sold through the estate's own tasting room, direct shipping and specialist organic retailers.

Awards

At Weingut Trautwein, the pioneering role outweighs any single award: over more than four decades the family has shown that organic and later biodynamic viticulture on the Kaiserstuhl is not only possible but qualitatively convincing. Admission to the Renaissance des Appellations in 2013 is regarded as an accolade from the international biodynamic scene. The estate is also listed in relevant wine guides such as Falstaff and is a fixture in specialist organic retail.
