Summary
Cantina Tollo is one of Italy's best-known cooperative wineries and a leading ambassador for Abruzzo around the world. Founded in 1960 in the village of the same name in the province of Chieti, it today brings together around 700 grower families who jointly farm roughly 2,500 hectares of vines in the hills between the Adriatic and the Apennines. Its flagship is Montepulciano d'Abruzzo – a powerful, approachable red that accounts for about half of the roughly 18 million bottles produced each year. Alongside it are fresh whites from regional varieties and an early-launched organic and sustainability line that has made Tollo known well beyond the region.
History
Cantina Tollo was founded in 1960 at a difficult time: Abruzzo was suffering from the emigration of many people who left the rural regions after the war in search of work. A handful of growers in the village of Tollo joined forces to press, market and thereby preserve winegrowing in the region. From this idea of self-help grew, over the decades, one of the largest and most respected cooperatives in Italy.
As membership grew, so did ambition. Rather than focusing on volume alone, the winery invested early in quality, cellar technology and the care of typical regional grape varieties. As early as the 1990s Tollo began organic viticulture – at a time when organic was still a niche in Italy. Today the cooperative unites around 700 grower families and exports its wines to numerous countries.
Location & Terroir
Tollo lies in the east of Abruzzo, in the province of Chieti, in the gentle hills of the so-called Teatina. The landscape is shaped by a dual influence: to the east the view reaches the Adriatic, while to the west rises the mighty Maiella massif of the Apennines. This proximity of sea and mountains creates a mild, sunny climate with pronounced day-night temperature swings – ideal conditions for preserving both ripeness and freshness in the grapes.
The soils of the hillside sites are mostly clay-limestone and well aerated. Cool breezes from the sea and mountains keep the vineyards healthy and encourage a slow, even ripening. These sites suit above all the red Montepulciano, which here develops its characteristic depth of colour and soft tannin structure.
Style & Philosophy
The style of Cantina Tollo combines regional tradition with modern cellar work. At its core lies the idea of making the character of Abruzzo accessible to a broad audience: the reds are juicy, fruit-forward and soft, the whites fresh and aromatic. The range runs from uncomplicated everyday wines to ambitious selections from the members' best parcels.
Sustainability plays a special role. As early as the 1990s Tollo converted part of its area to organic farming and later built up its own organic and vegan line. Certifications such as ISO 14001 for environmental management and food-safety standards underline this commitment. Winemaking is led by cellar master Riccardo Brighigna together with a team of oenologists and agronomists who work closely with the grower families.
Notable Vineyards & Wines
As a cooperative made up of many small parcels, Tollo relies less on individual famous vineyards than on variety-driven lines and selections. Among the most important wines are:
- Montepulciano d'Abruzzo DOC – the powerful heart of the range, in several quality tiers up to aged selections
- Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo DOC – the bright cherry-coloured rosé from the Montepulciano grape
- Trebbiano d'Abruzzo DOC – a fresh, uncomplicated regional white
- Pecorino and Passerina – aromatic, rediscovered white varieties of Abruzzo
- Organic and vegan wines under the sustainability line, some in eco-friendly packaging
Many of these wines are released under the broader Terre di Chieti IGT designation when they fall outside the tighter DOC rules.
Awards
Cantina Tollo is one of Italy's most awarded cooperatives internationally. At renowned competitions it has repeatedly been named “Best Cooperative in Italy” and has collected numerous medals, including at Mundus Vini. Cellar master Riccardo Brighigna received the Cangrande Medal from Vinitaly in 2013 – one of the most respected honours for oenological achievement in Italy. These successes show how a cooperative from a small Abruzzo village has become, over decades, a reliable name for good value and sustainable winegrowing.
