Abruzzo - Montepulciano d'Abruzzo & Cerasuolo

Summary / At a Glance

Abruzzo is one of Italy's most underrated wine regions – known for Montepulciano d'Abruzzo DOC, a fruity, approachable red wine, and Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo DOC, a characterful rosé. The region stretches from the Adriatic coast in the east to the Apennines in the west, combining Mediterranean climate with alpine influences.

Abruzzo produces uncomplicated, affordable wines for everyday enjoyment – but also some outstanding bottles from quality producers that show what the region is truly capable of.

Quick Facts:

  • Location: Central Italy, between Marche and Molise, Adriatic coast to Apennines
  • Size: Approx. 33,000 hectares of vineyard area
  • Climate: Mediterranean on the coast, continental inland
  • Main Grape Varieties: Montepulciano (red), Trebbiano (white)
  • Wine Styles: Fruity red wines, fresh rosés, light white wines
  • Highlight: Cerasuolo – one of Italy's best rosés

Geography and Climate

Abruzzo stretches from the Adriatic coast (sea level) to the Apennine peaks (up to 2,900m). The vineyards lie between 100 and 500 meters elevation in the gentle hills between coast and mountains.

The climate is Mediterranean on the coast (warm, humid) and continental inland (hot summers, cold winters). The proximity to the Apennines provides:

  • Cool nights: Preserving acidity
  • Good ventilation: Reducing fungal diseases
  • Temperature variation: Promoting aroma development

The soils are diverse: clay, sand, limestone – yielding approachable, fruity wines.

Grape Varieties

Montepulciano (Red Grape Variety)

Note: Not to be confused with Vino Nobile di Montepulciano (Tuscany, made from Sangiovese)!

Montepulciano is an indigenous grape variety of Abruzzo:

  • Aromas: Black cherry, plum, herbs, spices
  • Character: Medium body, soft tannins, fruity, approachable
  • Acidity: Moderate, food-friendly
  • Aging: Stainless steel or short oak aging (traditionally large botti)

Trebbiano d'Abruzzo (White Grape Variety)

Trebbiano produces fresh, light white wines:

  • Aromas: Citrus, green apple, herbs
  • Character: Light, crisp, uncomplicated
  • Pairing: Everyday wine, seafood, pasta

Wine Styles

Montepulciano d'Abruzzo DOC

  • Basic: Fruity, approachable, enjoyable young, 10-15 euros
  • Colline Teramane DOCG: Higher quality, more structured, age-worthy (5-10 years), 18-30 euros

Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo DOC (Rosé)

  • Highlight: One of Italy's most characterful rosés
  • Aromas: Strawberry, cherry, herbs, spicy
  • Character: Medium body (not light like Provence rosé!), fruity-spicy, food-friendly
  • Pairing: Pasta, grilled vegetables, seafood

Trebbiano d'Abruzzo DOC

  • Character: Light, fresh, citrusy
  • Pairing: Everyday wine, aperitif

My Personal Recommendation

Favorite winery: Emidio Pepe – authentic, traditional, age-worthy wines. Tiberio for modern, accessible quality.

Starting point: Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo (12-18 euros) – it will change your mind about rosé! Montepulciano d'Abruzzo (10-15 euros) – fruity, uncomplicated red wine.

Tasting tip: Visit Teramo – the center of Colline Teramane, with beautiful rolling hills. Or: Pescara on the Adriatic – seafood + Cerasuolo.

Cuisine: Cerasuolo with Brodetto (fish stew), Montepulciano with Arrosticini (lamb skewers), Trebbiano with fried seafood.

Abruzzo is the region for explorers – underrated, authentic, affordable. Salute!
