Summary
The Kellerei St. Michael-Eppan in the Überetsch is one of the best-known and most highly rated names in South Tyrol – and it manages this despite being a co-operative. Around 320 member families together farm some 385 to 390 hectares at altitudes between 400 and 900 metres, from which about 80 % of production is white wine. What makes the winery unmistakable is its uncompromising commitment to quality and the signature of cellar master Hans Terzer, who has steered the estate towards white grapes such as Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Bianco and Gewürztraminer since the 1970s. With the Sanct Valentin selection line and the prestige cuvée Appius, St. Michael-Eppan has set benchmarks and is today considered one of Italy's leading quality co-operatives.
History
The winery's roots go back to 1907, when growers in the Überetsch joined forces to form a wine co-operative. The idea behind it was simple and typical of South Tyrol: many small family businesses pool their grapes in order to achieve better quality and a stronger market presence together. Over more than a century, this alliance has grown into one of the most respected addresses in the country.
The estate owes its decisive leap to the top above all to one person: Hans Terzer took charge of the cellar in the 1970s and consistently steered the winery towards white grapes – at a time when South Tyrol was still strongly shaped by red wine. A milestone came in 1986 with the launch of the Sanct Valentin selection line, with which the co-operative showed that even a business with hundreds of members can produce absolute top wines. Later, Appius was added – a limited prestige cuvée bearing Terzer's personal signature.
Location & Terroir
St. Michael-Eppan lies in the Überetsch, that sun-blessed hill country southwest of Bolzano that is home to some of Italy's finest white wines. The region's great advantage is its enormous range of altitudes: the members' vines stand between about 400 and 900 metres, spread across a wide variety of slopes and soils.
These differences in altitude are the key to the estate's style. In the cooler, higher-lying vineyards the grapes retain more freshness and acidity, while the warmer sites provide ripeness and power. Add to this large day-to-night temperature swings, which give the wines their lively aromatics. The soils range from calcareous weathered rock to loamy-sandy formations – a diversity that allows the cellar to find the right site for each grape variety.
Style & Philosophy
The stylistic core idea at St. Michael-Eppan is precision. Despite the co-operative structure with around 320 families, every parcel is closely monitored and the harvest date pinpointed exactly. In the cellar, Hans Terzer relies on a variety-true, clear approach that puts the origin of the grapes front and centre rather than masking it with too much technology.
The focus is clearly on white wine – around 80 % of production. Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Bianco and Gewürztraminer form the heart of the range, complemented by Chardonnay and Pinot Grigio. The simpler lines are fresh and accessible, while the top wines offer structure, depth and considerable ageing potential. This combination of volume and uncompromising quality makes the winery a model for modern co-operative winegrowing.
Notable Wines & Lines
The range is clearly tiered: from accessible everyday wines to limited prestige bottlings. Among the estate's best-known wines and lines are:
- Sanct Valentin – the renowned selection line since 1986, including one of South Tyrol's most famous Sauvignon Blancs
- Appius – the limited prestige cuvée from the hand of Hans Terzer
- Classic – the fresh, variety-true entry line for everyday enjoyment
- Selection and The Wine Collection – ambitious lines between entry level and the very top
The white wines from the Sanct Valentin line in particular are regularly among the highest-rated in Italy.
