Summary
Weingut St. Antony in Nierstein is one of the best-known addresses in Rheinhessen. Its vineyards lie on the famous Roter Hang (red slope) – those steep terraces of red clay and slate that rise above the Rhine and count among Germany's most distinctive terroirs. Across around 60 hectares, the estate produces uncompromisingly dry, mineral Rieslings from great sites such as Pettenthal, Hipping, Ölberg and Orbel. It is farmed biodynamically to Demeter standards and run by winemaker and cellar master Dirk Würtz. As a VDP member, St. Antony is one of the defining estates of the region.
History
The estate's roots reach back to 1912, when the Gutehoffnungshütte – the industrial group later known as MAN – acquired a limestone pit in the south of Nierstein together with the neighbouring vineyards. After the First World War, demand for limestone collapsed, and the management decided to use the land for viticulture. The first vintage was made in 1920.
The estate received its present name in 1995: "St. Antony" recalls the St.-Antony-Hütte in Oberhausen, the first ironworks in the Ruhr region and the nucleus of the parent company. A decisive turning point came in 2005, when the entrepreneur Detlev Meyer took over the estate and consistently reoriented it towards quality and ecological farming. Since 2019, winemaker and cellar master Dirk Würtz has run the estate as managing partner and shapes its style today.
Location & Terroir
St. Antony lies on the Roter Hang, one of Germany's most striking stretches of vineyard. For several kilometres between Nierstein and Nackenheim, steep slopes of red clay and slate (Rotliegend) run along the Rhine. This iron-rich soil stores warmth, drains well, and gives the Rieslings their unmistakable spicy, saline, almost smoky minerality.
The south-easterly exposure and the proximity to the river provide plenty of light and a moderating warmth, so the grapes ripen slowly and fully. The steepness of the sites makes handwork indispensable – a demanding but rewarding setting for great wines.
Style & Philosophy
St. Antony sees itself as a terroir estate: the red slate should appear in the glass as unmasked as possible. The estate is farmed biodynamically – certified organic since 2006 and certified to Demeter standards since 2018. Cover crops, compost and the avoidance of synthetic inputs are intended to foster living soils and resilient vines.
In the cellar, the team relies on spontaneous fermentation, long lees ageing and restrained use of wood, so that origin and vintage remain in the foreground. The Rieslings are dry, taut and mineral, with clear fruit and fine acidity. They are complemented by finely spiced Silvaner and – from the warmer parcels – Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir).
Notable Sites & Wines
The range is clearly tiered: from accessible estate and village wines to the great single-site Rieslings from the Roter Hang. Among the estate's most famous vineyards are:
- Nierstein Pettenthal – a steep core site of the Roter Hang, for deep, mineral Rieslings
- Nierstein Hipping – elegant and full of finesse
- Nierstein Ölberg – powerful and spicy
- Nierstein Orbel – dense and long-lived
These wines regularly rank among the most characterful dry Rieslings in Rheinhessen.
Awards
St. Antony is consistently listed among the best addresses in Rheinhessen in the leading wine guides (Falstaff, Gault&Millau, Eichelmann) and tastings. As a VDP member with several great sites and consistent biodynamic work, the estate is regarded as one of the flagships for the unmistakable Riesling of the Roter Hang.
