Across around 21 hectares in the Churfranken on the lower Main – predominantly Pinot Noir – it produces wines of international standing. What makes the estate unmistakable is the combination of a warm, sheltered climate in the Miltenberg valley basin and the lean, weathered Buntsandstein (red sandstone) soils, which give the Spätburgunder a silky texture, fine spice and great ageing potential. Since Paul Fürst reoriented the estate towards wine from 1979, Rudolf Fürst has carried the reputation of Franconian Pinot Noir to the very top; today Sebastian Fürst continues this signature.
History
The estate's roots reach far back: the Fürst family is documented as winegrowers in Bürgstadt since 1638, giving the house an almost 400-year viticultural tradition. For generations the business was a mixed farm in which wine was only one part.
The decisive turning point came with Paul and Monika Fürst: in 1979 they built a new winery and reoriented the business consistently towards quality wine. Paul Fürst acquired the best parcels, embraced Burgundian growing and cellar methods early on, and made Franconian Spätburgunder known internationally. In 1980 the estate joined the VDP. From 2007 Paul ran the business together with his son Sebastian Fürst, who had previously gained experience at renowned estates. Since 2018 Sebastian has led the estate with his wife Isabell in the second generation, continuing the uncompromising commitment to quality.
Location & Terroir
Rudolf Fürst lies in Bürgstadt am Main, in the so-called Churfranken on the lower Main south of Aschaffenburg – one of the warmest corners of Franken. Sheltered in the Miltenberg valley basin and by the surrounding heights of the Spessart and Odenwald, it enjoys a mild, sunny climate that reliably ripens the demanding Spätburgunder.
Buntsandstein (red sandstone) is decisive: the red, lean weathered soils store warmth and force the vines to root deeply. On this subsoil, taut, mineral wines with fine structure emerge. The heart is the south-facing Bürgstadter Centgrafenberg, complemented by the steep terraced slopes of the Klingenberger Schlossberg. This combination of warmth and meagre sandstone is the foundation of the estate's unmistakable style.
Style & Philosophy
The stylistic core idea at Rudolf Fürst is a Burgundian approach to Spätburgunder: close-to-nature viticulture, low yields, careful hand-harvesting and gentle ageing in wooden casks. The reds mature in barrique without the wood dominating the wine – the goal is depth, silkiness and precision rather than brute power. Characteristic are the fine tannin structure and the great ageing potential of the top wines.
With the white wines too, the estate emphasises origin and clarity. Riesling and Weißburgunder from Buntsandstein are racy, mineral and filigree. The rare Frühburgunder, an old Bürgstadt speciality, adds a dark, spicy facet to the red range.
