Summary

Weingut Peter Kriechel in Ahrweiler is regarded as the largest private family winery on the Ahr. From modest beginnings with around 1.5 hectares in 1952, it has grown into an estate with around 27 hectares of vines today, focused almost entirely on the Pinot family. At its heart are Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) and the rare Frühburgunder, of which Kriechel farms more than four hectares – one of the largest private plantings anywhere. The third generation now runs the estate, which Gault&Millau rates with three grapes – and which made an impressive comeback after the devastating flood of 2021.

History

According to the family, the Kriechels' winegrowing tradition goes back to around 1550. The present estate, however, was founded by Peter Kriechel in 1952 in Marienthal – with just around 1.5 hectares of vines. In 1969 his sons Ernst and Hermann Kriechel took over and expanded the business step by step. In the 1970s the winery moved to Ahrweiler, where it is still based on Walporzheimer Straße.

Since 2003 the third generation has shaped the estate: Markus and Michael Kriechel run the business together with their father Ernst. Under their direction the vineyard area grew to around 27 hectares and the winery established itself in the wine guides. At the end of 2007 Kriechel rose to two grapes in Gault&Millau, and the third followed in 2011.

The Ahr flood of July 2021 was a deep turning point. According to reports, the estate lost around 40,000 litres of cask wine and about 30,000 bottles, with total damage estimated at about four million euros. With great commitment from the family and many helpers, the winery was rebuilt – today it also includes a wine house, holiday flats and the apartment house "Kriechels Terroir".

Location & Terroir

The Ahr is one of the northernmost red wine regions in the world and one of Germany's smallest growing areas. That Pinot Noir of international class still ripens here is thanks to the steep, south-facing slopes of the narrow valley: slate and greywacke soils store the warmth of the day and release it to the vines at night, while the rock faces create an almost Mediterranean microclimate.

Kriechel's vineyards are spread across several villages along the river – from Marienthal via Walporzheim and Ahrweiler to Bad Neuenahr. This lets the estate make use of different soils and exposures: the steep, barren slate sites for concentrated reds, and the somewhat deeper sites for fruity, approachable wines.

Style & Philosophy

According to the estate, Kriechel practises near-natural viticulture: exclusively organic fertilisation, no insecticides or botryticides, yield reduction through green harvesting and hand picking. In the cellar the red wines are made classically on the skins; some mature in barrels crafted from local Ahr oak – a regional detail the estate deliberately cultivates.

Stylistically, juicy, fruit-driven Spätburgunder with clear structure takes centre stage, alongside Frühburgunder with its typically soft, berry-like character. The range is rounded off with Blanc de Noir, rosé, Weißburgunder and Grauburgunder, Riesling, sparkling wines and a gin matured in wine barrels. Most of the roughly 180,000 bottles produced each year go directly to private customers.

Notable Vineyards & Wines

The estate farms parcels in several well-known Ahr sites, including:

  • Walporzheimer Kräuterberg – a steep, warm slate site yielding concentrated reds
  • Walporzheimer Pfaffenberg
  • Ahrweiler Rosenthal
  • Marienthaler Rosenberg – the site at the estate's place of origin
  • Neuenahrer Sonnenberg

The range extends from estate and village wines through single-vineyard wines to premium barrique-aged Spätburgunder and Frühburgunder.

Awards

Gault&Millau has listed the estate with three grapes since 2011, and Der Feinschmecker has also counted Kriechel among Germany's best wineries. According to the estate, Kriechel won an award at the German Red Wine Prize of VINUM in 2016 and has repeatedly reached the finals of renowned German wine competitions. The winery also supplied wines for the 2014 Berlinale and for federal receptions – evidence of how far the reputation of this Ahr family business now reaches.
