Summary
Weingut Oliver Zeter in Neustadt-Haardt is one of the best-known addresses for Sauvignon Blanc in the Pfalz – and across Germany. Oliver Zeter came to winemaking as a career changer from the wine trade and sommellerie, bottled his first vintage in 2007 and has since focused entirely on a modern, international style. Across around 20 hectares he produces predominantly dry wines, above all the wood-aged Sauvignon Blanc “Fumé”, which earned the estate its reputation as a Sauvignon Blanc specialist. Alongside the flagship variety there is Riesling, Pinot varieties and ambitious reds.
History
Oliver Zeter's path to his own estate ran differently from that of many Pfalz colleagues. Instead of taking over a family business, he came to winemaking as a career changer – with experience in the wine trade and sommellerie and training as a wine technician. Stints abroad, among others in Italy and South Africa, shaped his view of grape varieties and style long before he bottled wine himself.
Then in 2007 came his first own vintage. From the outset Zeter set a clear focus on Sauvignon Blanc – a variety that was still a niche in Germany at the time. It was precisely this focus that quickly made the young estate known. Within a few years Oliver Zeter had become a fixed name whenever the talk was of German Sauvignon Blanc at a high level.
Location & Terroir
The estate is based in Neustadt an der Weinstraße, more precisely in the Haardt district, in the heart of the Pfalz. The region is one of the warmest and sunniest wine-growing zones in Germany – ideal conditions for aromatic white wines and also for ripe red varieties such as Syrah and Cabernet.
The vines are spread across owned and long-term contract sites in the surrounding area; figures for the total area vary and lie at around 20 hectares. The Haardt escarpment, the eastern spur of the Palatinate Forest, provides a mild climate and shelters the sites from weather extremes. These warm, sheltered conditions give the Sauvignon Blanc its ripe, expressive fruit – far removed from the emphatically grassy, green versions from cooler regions.
Style & Philosophy
Oliver Zeter's style is deliberately modern and international. The wines are predominantly made dry, precise and approachable. With Sauvignon Blanc the spectrum ranges from a fresh, steel-tank-fermented entry level to complex wines aged in barrique or large wooden casks.
The best example of this is the Sauvignon Blanc “Fumé” – the estate's signature wine. The wood ageing gives it structure, depth and a smoky, spicy note that sets it apart from simpler Sauvignons. This idea of ageing Sauvignon Blanc not only fresh and fruity but also ambitiously in wood has become Oliver Zeter's hallmark. The range is rounded out by Riesling, Pinot varieties and ambitious reds.
Notable Sites & Wines
At the centre of the range stands Sauvignon Blanc in several styles – from the classically fresh estate wine through the wood-aged “Fumé” line to the Reserve. This tiering makes the estate's style easy to follow: you can taste your way from the light entry level up to the complex top wine.
Alongside this the programme covers a broad palette of further varieties:
- White wines: Riesling, Weißburgunder (Pinot Blanc), Grauburgunder (Pinot Gris), Chardonnay, Viognier and Sauvignon Gris
- Red wines: Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir), Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc
It is precisely the international varieties like Viognier, Syrah and Cabernet that show how far the estate thinks beyond the classic Pfalz canon.
Awards
Oliver Zeter's Sauvignon Blanc has brought the estate much recognition. “Der Feinschmecker” named the 2011 Sauvignon Blanc the best in Germany – an early accolade that cemented the estate's reputation as a specialist. The wines also found attention internationally: the renowned British Decanter awarded 93 points, and at Mundus Vini there was Gold in 2019.
These awards underline what defines the estate: Oliver Zeter is among the established names when it comes to German Sauvignon Blanc at a high level – a specialist who made a then still unfamiliar variety popular in Germany.
