Summary
Weingut Gröhl in the Rheinhessen village of Weinolsheim is a family estate with an exceptionally long history: the family has been making wine here since 1625 – today in its 13th generation. Across around 30 hectares it produces mineral, dry Rieslings, concentrated Silvaner from old vines and fine Pinot Blanc and Pinot Noir. Part of the vineyards lie in the world-famous sites of the Roter Hang near Nierstein. Since 2022 the estate has farmed fully organically. Franziska and Johannes Gröhl have recently brought new momentum to the traditional house and earned several newcomer and rising-star awards for it.
History
The estate's roots reach back to 1625 – winegrowing in Weinolsheim has been part of the Gröhl family ever since. Over the centuries, 13 generations passed on their knowledge and shaped the estate, which today is based in the heart of the village of Weinolsheim.
More recent development was first shaped by Eckehart Gröhl, who took over the family business in the mid-1990s and drove it forward in quality. Under him the vineyard area grew, and in 2003 a new pressing house with modern white- and red-wine cellars was built. The next step is now taken by his children Franziska and Johannes Gröhl: they represent the 13th generation, converted the estate to organic viticulture in 2022 and gave the house a young, independent signature.
Location & Terroir
Weinolsheim lies in the south of Rheinhessen, close to the Rhine and just south of the wine town of Nierstein. The climate is mild and comparatively dry – Rheinhessen is one of Germany's warmer growing zones, which favours ripe, accessible wines.
The limestone and marl soils around Weinolsheim are formative, especially for Riesling, which develops its mineral finesse here. A particular treasure are the parcels on the Roter Hang: the steep vineyards between Nierstein and Nackenheim rest on red clay and slate soils (Rotliegendes), which give the Rieslings power, spice and an unmistakable minerality. This small-scale diversity of soils allows the estate to draw a distinct character from each site.
Style & Philosophy
At the heart is honest, terroir-driven winemaking. Most wines are vinified dry and aim to reflect their origin clearly – from the uncomplicated estate wine to the concentrated single-vineyard bottling. The Riesling from old vines, some over 40 years old, is the flagship: mineral, taut and full of finesse. Alongside it stand a dense, velvety Silvaner from old vines and the Pinot family – from spicy Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc to juicy Pinot Noir and the rare Frühburgunder.
With the conversion to organic viticulture in 2022, Franziska and Johannes Gröhl sharpened their philosophy: sustainable farming in the vineyard, careful work in the cellar and a modern, precise style. The estate's sparkling wine has also become a hallmark and has won several awards.
Notable sites & wines
The range is clearly tiered: from accessible estate and village wines to the wines from the top sites. Especially sought-after are the Rieslings from the Roter Hang near Nierstein, whose world-famous sites the estate has access to:
- Niersteiner Pettenthal – a steep site on the Roter Hang, source of one of the estate's top Rieslings
- Niersteiner Ölberg – powerful, spicy Rieslings on red slate
- Niersteiner Hölle – warm and also known for firm Pinots
- Plus the vineyards around Weinolsheim on limestone and marl soils, the basis for Silvaner and estate wines
The spectrum ranges from fresh estate Riesling through herb-scented Silvaner and Pinots to the mineral single-vineyard Rieslings and the estate's own sparkling wine.
Awards
The family's recent work has been recognised several times. The Eichelmann guide lists Gröhl as an "outstanding winery", Vinum named the estate Rheinhessen's "riser of the year 2022", and Johannes Gröhl was chosen by Falstaff as "Newcomer of the Year 2023". Add to this successes at the German Sparkling Wine Award and various young-talent prizes – proof that the traditional estate has made the leap into the current top tier of the young Rheinhessen wine scene.
