Weingut F.X. Pichler in Oberloiben is one of the cult estates of the Wachau and of Austria as a whole. Across around 20 hectares in the best sites between Oberloiben and Dürnstein it produces exclusively white wines – powerful, dense and exceptionally long-lived Grüner Veltliner and Riesling. From 1971 onwards, Franz Xaver “F.X.” Pichler shaped the once-small estate into an international legend; today his son Lucas Pichler runs the operation. World-famous are the cult wines “M” (Monumental) and “Unendlich”, which regularly rank among the country’s most sought-after white wines.
History
The estate was founded in 1898 in Oberloiben and has been family-owned for around five generations. The decisive rise, however, only began with Franz Xaver Pichler, known as “F.X.”: when he took over the operation in 1971 with just about three hectares, the Wachau as a white-wine region was still far from its present global renown.
F.X. Pichler focused uncompromisingly on the highest quality, low yields and the power of the great sites – and over the decades made the estate an international benchmark. His son Lucas Pichler has worked in the operation since 1996, has been responsible for the cellar since 1999 and has officially led the estate since 2019. He carries on the house’s signature in the fifth generation.
Location & Terroir
F.X. Pichler lies in Oberloiben right on the Danube in the eastern part of the Wachau. The region is shaped by the interplay of warm Pannonian air from the east and cool winds from the Waldviertel to the north – a contrast that gives the wines both ripeness and freshness.
Characteristic are the steep primary-rock terraces of gneiss and mica schist that rise above the Danube, as well as sandy-loess soils in the flatter sites. Riesling thrives best on the meagre primary rock, which gives it minerality and precision, while Grüner Veltliner also appreciates the deeper loess soils. The extreme steepness of many sites calls for demanding manual labour.
Style & Philosophy
The wines of F.X. Pichler express an uncompromising quality philosophy: powerful, dense, concentrated and built for long ageing. Instead of light, early-drinking wines, the estate aims for depth and the expression of each individual site. Fully ripe grapes, strict selection and precise ageing form the foundation.
Within the Wachau tradition, the top wines long stood in the Smaragd category – the region’s most powerful dry wines. Since leaving the Vinea Wachau in 2020, the estate has classified its wines according to the Wachau DAC origin system into regional, village and single-vineyard wines. The style, however, remains unmistakable: monumental, long-lived white wines with great expressive power.

The heart of the estate are the great sites between Oberloiben and Dürnstein. Among the best known are:
- Kellerberg – one of the most famous sites in the Wachau, for Grüner Veltliner and Riesling
- Loibenberg – powerful, sun-drenched wines
- Steinertal – finesse-rich Riesling
- Dürnsteiner Liebenberg, Frauenweingärten, Klostersatz and Burgstall
At the top stand the cult wines “M” (Monumental) – first made as a Grüner Veltliner in 1991 – and the Riesling “Unendlich”, both of which are produced only in suitable vintages and are highly coveted internationally.

For decades F.X. Pichler has consistently ranked among the highest-rated estates in Austria and is repeatedly compared internationally with the very greatest names in wine. The cult wines “M” and “Unendlich” regularly achieve top scores and record prices. Far beyond individual awards, the estate has played a major part in establishing the Wachau’s global reputation as one of the world’s best white-wine regions.
