Summary

Weingut Fritz Haag in Brauneberg is one of the most storied and highest-rated Riesling estates on the Mosel. Across around 20 hectares of steep slopes – planted almost entirely with Riesling – it makes wines regarded as the very definition of the filigree, mineral Mosel style. Its heart is the world-famous Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr, one of Germany's greatest Riesling sites. Fritz Haag crafts the full range of Prädikat wines – from dry Grosses Gewächs to nobly sweet Auslese and Beerenauslese that command top prices at the Trier auctions. Oliver Haag has continued his father Wilhelm's signature since 2005.

History

The estate's roots reach far back: it was first documented as early as 1605, and it has remained continuously in the hands of the Haag family for centuries. The family seat bears the name „Dusemonder Hof" – derived from Dusemond, the old name for Brauneberg used until the 20th century.

Above all it was Wilhelm Haag (1937–2020) who lifted the estate to global renown, ranking for decades among Germany's defining winemaking figures. Under his direction the Rieslings from the Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr became a fixture among the world's finest white wines. In 2005 he handed responsibility to his son Oliver Haag, who has run the estate ever since together with his wife Jessica – with the same uncompromising standards, but a distinct, even more delicate hand.

Location & Terroir

Fritz Haag sits in Brauneberg on the Middle Mosel. Directly opposite the village, across the river, rise the famous steep sites Brauneberger Juffer and Juffer-Sonnenuhr – south-facing slopes that in places reach up to roughly 80 % gradient and can only be worked by arduous manual labour.

The soil is pure Devonian slate: it stores the sun's warmth during the day and radiates it back to the vines at night, ripening the grapes fully even in the cool Mosel climate. At the same time, the cool proximity of the river preserves the fine, vibrant acidity that gives Mosel Riesling its backbone and its enormous ageing potential. This interplay yields the estate's unmistakably filigree, mineral style.

Style & Philosophy

Fritz Haag's wines stand for clarity, finesse and precision. Rather than power and opulence, the estate pursues transparency: the Rieslings are meant to reflect their origin and vintage as faithfully as possible. The result is light-footed, mouth-watering wines with a fine interplay of fruit, minerality and acidity.

Oliver Haag makes the complete spectrum of Mosel Riesling: dry wines up to Grosses Gewächs, the classic fruity-sweet Prädikats Kabinett, Spätlese and Auslese, and – in suitable vintages – the nobly sweet rarities Beerenauslese (BA) and Trockenbeerenauslese (TBA). These concentrated, botrytis-marked sweet wines are among the estate's most sought-after bottlings.

Notable Vineyards & Wines

The range is clearly tiered – from estate Riesling through village wines to the single-vineyard bottlings. At the centre stand two VDP.Grosse Lage sites:

  • Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr – the estate's centrepiece and one of the world's greatest Riesling sites; source of the most filigree and long-lived wines
  • Brauneberger Juffer – the surrounding Grosse Lage, a touch broader in profile, likewise on pure slate

These sites yield both dry Grosses Gewächs and the full palette of fruity-sweet and nobly sweet Prädikats. The rare gold-capsule Auslesen and the Beeren- and Trockenbeerenauslesen count among the most coveted Mosel Rieslings of all.

Awards

The estate's reputation has grown over decades. Wilhelm Haag was named Gault Millau's very first „Winemaker of the Year" in 1994 – an accolade that cemented the house's standing in the German wine world. In 2008 Fritz Haag received the honour of „Collection of the Year".

To this day the estate's Rieslings rank among the highest-rated white wines internationally; at the historic Trier Mosel auctions its nobly sweet rarities regularly achieve top prices. Fritz Haag thus stands unchallenged in the front rank of the Mosel and has contributed decisively to the worldwide fame of Brauneberg Riesling.
