Summary
The Brogsitter estate – officially Brogsitter Weingüter · Privat-Sektkellerei · Exklusiv-Importe – is one of the most tradition-steeped wine houses on the Ahr. The Brogsitter family says it has been making wine since 1600 and was already exporting German wine from 1860. From its base in Grafschaft-Gelsdorf, the house farms around 33 hectares of its own Ahr vineyards, mostly planted with the Pinot red-grape varieties Spätburgunder and Frühburgunder. What makes Brogsitter unmistakable is the combination of three things: a working estate with its own vineyards, the Ahr's oldest private sparkling-wine cellar, and the historic Sanct Peter inn in Walporzheim, whose wine-tavern history goes back to the year 1246. Brogsitter is therefore no mere trading house but a deeply rooted Ahr producer with its own signature in red wine and Sekt.
History
The roots of the house reach far back: the Brogsitter winemaking family traces its tradition to the year 1600. From 1860, the family also acted as an exporter of German wines, laying the foundation for today's broadly based wine house. Since the 16th century the Sanct Peter property in Walporzheim has also been in family hands – a place whose history as a wine tavern is documented as far back as the year 1246 and whose buildings are among the oldest in the Ahr valley.
Over the centuries Brogsitter grew from a classic winemaking business into a group that unites estate, sparkling-wine cellar, import and hospitality under one roof. Today it is led by Hans-Joachim Brogsitter. The company's base lies in Grafschaft-Gelsdorf at the upper edge of the Ahr valley, where the estate-grown wines are matured and bottled.
Location & Terroir
The Ahr is one of Germany's smallest and most northerly wine regions – and at the same time a stronghold of German Pinot Noir. The narrow, often steep river valley acts like a heat store: the dark slate and greywacke soils soak up the sun's warmth by day and release it to the vines at night. This combination of a sheltered microclimate and lean, stony soils makes it possible to grow fully ripe, deep red wines even in the cool north.
Brogsitter farms its roughly 33 hectares in classic Ahr sites with slate and loess soils. The lean subsoil forces the vines to root deeply and yield little – the basis for concentrated, minerally wines. The mostly south-facing slopes provide the sunshine needed for Spätburgunder and Frühburgunder in particular to reach the ripeness and spice typical of the Ahr.
Style & Philosophy
At the centre stands red wine: around two thirds of the vineyard area is planted with Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir), joined by about 15% Frühburgunder as well as Portugieser, Dornfelder and a small share of Riesling. The top wines are mostly vinified dry and aged for many months in wooden casks or barrique, which gives them structure, fine tannins and ageing potential. Frühburgunder – an early-ripening, small-berried relative of Pinot Noir – is regarded as an Ahr speciality and yields especially dense, spicy reds.
The second pillar is Sekt. Brogsitter runs the Ahr's oldest private sparkling-wine cellar and specialises in single-variety Sekt made by traditional bottle fermentation. Alongside classic Pinot and Riesling Sekt, the red Sanct Peter Sekt is a particular hallmark – a rarity typical of the red-wine Ahr. The range is rounded off by the hospitality at the Sanct Peter inn, where the estate's own wines can be tasted right at their source.
Notable Vineyards & Wines
Brogsitter makes its wines from several classic Ahr sites. The named vineyards include:
- Klosterberg and Alte Lay – core sites for Pinot Noir
- Pfaffenberg, Kräuterberg and Silberberg – steep, slate-rich red-wine sites
- Domlay and Himmelchen – further single sites in the house's portfolio
The range features classic lines and editions, among them wines such as "Graf von Are", "Ad Aram" and the slate-marked "Pinot-Ahr-Schiefer", as well as the PRIVATE EDITION (Spätburgunder) and EDITION B (Frühburgunder) series. Added to these are the single-variety Sekts built around the red Sanct Peter.
Awards
Brogsitter regularly receives state awards from Rhineland-Palatinate in gold, silver and bronze and, with its long tradition, ranks among the best-known wine addresses on the Ahr. Well beyond the region, the house is known above all for its blend of estate viticulture, a historic sparkling-wine cellar and the Sanct Peter inn – an ensemble that embodies the wine culture of the Ahr valley like few others.
