The Home of Elegant Riesling

The Rheingau is one of Germany's most prestigious wine-growing regions. On just 3,200 hectares, some of the world's finest Rieslings are produced here — elegant, mineral and of unique finesse.

Geography & Terroir

The Rheingau benefits from a uniquely advantageous geographical position:

  • Location: Between Wiesbaden and Lorch on the Rhine
  • Special feature: The Rhine flows westward for 30 km here
  • Aspect: South-facing slopes with optimal sun exposure
  • Soils: Slate, quartzite, loess and loam

"The Rheingau is the Côte d'Or of Riesling." – Hugh Johnson

Climate

The mild climate makes all the difference:

  • Protected by the Taunus hills to the north
  • The Rhine as a heat reservoir
  • Long, sunny autumn days
  • Ideal conditions for slow ripening

The Most Important Villages

| Village | Character | Notable Sites | |---------|-----------|---------------| | Rüdesheim | Powerful, mineral | Berg Schlossberg, Berg Rottland | | Johannisberg | Elegant, classic | Schloss Johannisberg | | Hattenheim | Delicately fruity | Pfaffenberg, Steinberg | | Erbach | Full, spicy | Marcobrunn | | Rauenthal | Spicy, complex | Baiken, Gehrn | | Hochheim | Earthy, robust | Hölle, Kirchenstück |
