Summary
The Famille Perrin is one of the defining families of the southern Rhône. Its heart is Château de Beaucastel in Courthézon, an estate in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation that has been in the family since 1909 and is run today by several Perrin siblings, now in roughly the fifth generation. Around Beaucastel, some 100 hectares are planted with all 13 grape varieties permitted in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, with an unusually high share of Mourvèdre for the region. The Perrins are also pioneers of organic and biodynamic viticulture. Beyond the flagship estate, they have built a broad portfolio with vineyards across the Rhône and the globally successful brand „La Vieille Ferme“ – from everyday wine to cult bottle.
History
Wine has been made on the site of Château de Beaucastel for centuries; the first reliable mentions of vines go back to the 16th century. For the Perrin family the story begins in 1909, when the estate passed into family ownership via Pierre Tramier. In the decades that followed, Jacques Perrin in particular shaped the house philosophy – to this day the legendary top cuvée „Hommage à Jacques Perrin“ is dedicated to him.
Over the decades the following generations steadily expanded the estate and established Beaucastel's international reputation as one of the most reliable and long-lived Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines of all. Today responsibility rests with the Perrin brothers – Marc, Pierre, Thomas and Mathieu – who, alongside the home estate, run numerous other Rhône vineyards and the family's internationally successful brands. The number of generations is given as roughly four to five, depending on how it is counted.
Location & Terroir
Beaucastel lies in the north of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation, near Courthézon in the Vaucluse département. The climate is Mediterranean and hot, shaped by the strong Mistral wind that keeps the vines dry and healthy. Characteristic of the region – and of Beaucastel especially – are the famous „galets roulés“, large rounded pebbles that store heat during the day and release it to the vines at night.
Beneath this layer of stones lie sandy and limestone soils that give the wines freshness and structure. The combination of heat, old vines and low yields is the foundation for the density and ageing potential of the Beaucastel wines. Beyond the home estate, the Perrin family farms vines in other appellations of the southern Rhône, including Ventoux and Luberon.
Style & Philosophy
At the core of the philosophy is natural winegrowing. The Perrins converted Beaucastel to organic farming as early as around 1950 and have worked biodynamically since 1974 – a pioneering role the estate took on long before today's organic trend. In the vineyard this means healthy soils, no synthetic inputs and the greatest possible expression of terroir.
Stylistically, Beaucastel stands out for its high Mourvèdre share, which gives the reds structure, spice and exceptional ageing potential – unlike the mostly Grenache-dominated neighbours. The red Châteauneuf-du-Pape traditionally uses all 13 permitted grape varieties. The whites are known for their unusually high proportion of Roussanne, which gives them richness and remarkable ageing potential.
