Saumur: home of Crémant de Loire, elegant Chenin Blanc wines and Cabernet Franc reds from Saumur-Champigny. Tuffeau cellars and tradition since the Middle Ages.

At a Glance

Saumur is the centre of Loire sparkling wines and one of France's most versatile wine regions. Located at the confluence of the Loire and Thouet rivers, Saumur unites three worlds: elegant sparkling wines (Crémant de Loire), mineral whites from Chenin Blanc and fruity reds from Cabernet Franc.

The historic town of Saumur, with its imposing castle above the river, is surrounded by vineyards on limestone (Tuffeau) – the same stone from which the legendary cave cellars are carved, where millions of bottles of Crémant mature. This combination of terroir, climate and centuries of winemaking expertise makes Saumur the second most important sparkling wine area in France after Champagne.

Geography and Terroir

Saumur sits strategically at the confluence of the Loire and Thouet, approximately 50 kilometres south-east of Angers. The region marks the transition from the Atlantic to the continental climate – cool enough for fresh acidity, warm enough for ripeness.

The soils are dominated by Tuffeau – the same soft limestone as in Vouvray. These soils:

  • Store heat and moisture
  • Reflect sunlight
  • Impart minerality and freshness
  • Enable cave cellars (constant 12°C)

The finest sites lie on gentle slopes with south and south-west exposure towards the river. For sparkling wines, cooler sites are ideal (higher acidity), while Cabernet Franc prefers warmer, sheltered areas.

The Appellations

Saumur AOC (White & Red)

Still whites (min. 80% Chenin Blanc) and reds (Cabernet Franc + Cabernet Sauvignon).

Saumur Mousseux & Crémant de Loire (Sparkling)

  • Saumur Mousseux: Traditional bottle fermentation (Méthode Traditionnelle)
  • Crémant de Loire: Stricter requirements (lower yields, min. 12 months on lees)

Crémant de Loire is the most prestigious French sparkling wine after Champagne. Main grapes: Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc (for rosé).

Saumur-Champigny AOC (Red)

The most famous sub-appellation for Cabernet Franc reds. Fruity, elegant, with red berries and floral notes.

Wine Styles

Crémant de Loire (Sparkling)

  • Style: Elegant, fine bubbles, fresh acidity
  • Aromas: Green apple, pear, brioche, almond
  • Grapes: Chenin Blanc (dominant), Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc (rosé)
  • Ageing: 12–24 months on lees
  • Price: €12–25
  • Quality: Best alternative to Champagne (one-third of the price!)

Saumur Blanc (White)

  • Style: Dry, mineral, firm acidity
  • Aromas: Green apple, quince, acacia, flint
  • Grape: Min. 80% Chenin Blanc
  • Ageing potential: 5–10 years

Saumur-Champigny is often referred to as the "Burgundy of the Loire" – elegant, not tannic, focused on fruit and finesse rather than power.

History

Saumur has a long winemaking tradition stretching back to the Middle Ages. Monks cultivated the slopes and carved the first cellars into the Tuffeau. In the 19th century, sparkling wine production began following the Champagne method – made easier by the ideal cellars and the high acidity of Chenin Blanc.

Today Saumur produces approximately 15 million bottles of Crémant annually – the majority of Loire sparkling wine production.

My Personal Recommendation

Crémant tip: Bouvet-Ladubay Trésor Brut (approx. €15) – excellent value for money, elegant, perfect as an aperitif or with seafood.

Red wine tip: Domaine Filliatreau Saumur-Champigny "Vieilles Vignes" (approx. €18) – shows what Cabernet Franc is capable of: fruit, elegance, freshness. Serve lightly chilled!

Pairing: Crémant de Loire with a goat's cheese tart or smoked salmon. The acidity and bubbles harmonise perfectly with creamy and salty flavours.
